Car runs hot (needle usually hovers at or above the N on temp guage) the fan does work and I can hear it switch on and off (frequently due to the car rarely cooling down) I have noticed the guage will sometimes drop down to where it should be, then slowly the temp creeps back up and stays there, fan or not, for awhile, then drops again. At first I thought the termostat was sticking, so I changed it. No change. The stench of antifreeze is present after I turn the car off and get out. Now there is smoke - not steam - coming from the front of the block area. Not alot, but enough to let me know something isnt right. The radiator needs to be topped off too. The dip stick doesnt show any milky residue, so I dont think Im looking at a head gasket issue. So where is the fluid going or leaking to cause nothing is ever left on the ground. The water pump is making absolutely no noise, no squeak or squeal. I have not removed any of the covers to see if it is leaking by the pump, but if the housing were cracked or something wouldnt the pump be making noise? The sudden and noticable drop on the guage would suggest either the thermostat opening from stuck or the pump suddenly engaging - right? So im stumped.

Do a pressure check by using a hand pump that fits on your rad opening (for the cap). Pump it up to 10 or 12 and see if it holds that pressure. If it doesn't, start looking for the coolant leak. A good first place to look is the little weep hole on the bottom of the water pump (use a dentist's mirror). If the coolant drips from there, it usually ends up on one of the cats, and that is why there is never any puddles.

cap

What lbs of pressure should the cap be? It currently has a 16lb one, yet the attendant at the store was pretty sure a 13lb was the correct one?
