Ok, I seem to have a little problem with my tranny. It is a damn confusing one, but I have determined it to be a problem with the overdrive. Ok, this will be hard to explain, but here goes.

my drive to work is about 15 minutes. this typically happens on the ride home. I get in my car, let it warm up for a few minutes. I drive home. Typically, in about the same amount of time my car shutters and then shifts into a second overdrive. I know this sounds odd, but thats what happens. at 70 miles an hour, my car is revving at around 3k. it will shift into overdrive, and the revs drop to about 2700. This all goes fine. but it appears, after everything gets warmed up, it attempts to upshift again. This is when the car shutters and the revs jump down real far. and after that happens, the revs drop to 2500. the car drives perfectly fine after that.this doesnt happen if I am doing city driving, only if I am cruising on the highway. and it only happens once. I can almost pinpoint the tiem it will do it. I have no idea what this is.

Ok, I know that was a very bad explanation, but, its hard to explain. you have to be in the car to actually feel what I mean. does anybody have any ideas what could be causing this?

oh ya, this is a 95 ATX with 73k miles on it. I am getting the tranny flushed in a month or so, when I get the cash.

Hmmmm...if you step into the gas, does the shuddering stop once the trans downshifts? I'm thinking you have the same problem my dad's '97 F-150 had. Driving along in overdrive, when the trans starts what seems like a cross between hunting for the next gear and trying to shift. The problem was fixed under recall, but I think it was a shift cable or something of that nature.

Now I belive that "second overdrive" you feel is the torque converter locking up. Now you may be talking about something I asked before ....or maybe not. If you are traveling like say above 60 and let off the gas quickly the revs will drop to like 1k (almost) and the car will slow down quick like you downshifted and they pop the revs back up when you put your foot back on the gas....or once it gets down to a certain speed. It's weird but it does it in the GEN III's and I belive the GEN II's did it too.

Hope this helps.

That is definitely the tq converter locking up. The problem I am having with my mountaineer is that it is shifting into overdrive at 40MPH, but the converter isn't locking up, and pretty much bogging the engine. There is now a bearing spun because of it, yet no recall. Try to do whatever you can do to keep it from shudering, whether it's taking the OD off, tapping the gas, anything. That shuddering means the engine is bogging and that load can be destructive on the engine.

but after the shudder, the car stays at 2500k. it doesnt go back up to were it was when it first shifted into overdrive. when it does shudder, the revs drop real low. then they settle at 2500k. If I hit the gas, I feel an downshiftthat takes me to 2800k, then another downshift that brings me into third gear at 3k. thats why it is so odd. I know the shuddering cant possibly be good, but is there anything I can do other than turning the overdrive off? I spend enough on gas as is. would a new TQ convertor solve this? and what the **** would a new convertor cost me? I am getting ready to order a new y-pipe, so theres 500 out the door. I wont be fluid again for a month or so. what kind of money am I running into here. I need to start saving.
