Well I just got my car back from it being in two different shops, it took almost two months but its running awsome. Just got a new clutch put in and also a new flywheel, also it a really big tune up. The two guys that did the tune up and the clutch/flywheel did an excellent job. (Meet them on here) All the gears are fine, I dont not grind any gears, but while trying to put it into reverse it grinds, most of the time. If you put it into reverse with very little effort, it will grind. If you almost ram it into it, all it does is grind. Is it how I put it into reverse or what? Also what is the synchros? I have no clue what they are. Ive been reading the manual for the car. I think I have read that you should wait 3 seconds from neutral to reverse, I have tried that, but it grinds. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Reverse is not syncronized.

Put in into a forward gear before shifting into reverse.

I normally slip it into 4th before I slip it into reverse.

sunny San Juan Bautista,
I recently found a post that suggested shifting into 2nd and then going straight to reverse because the gears are lined up...can't remember a few months back when I had my tranny apart how it would look. Anyways, I had been a 4th to reverse man myself but it does indeed seem to go into reverse even smoother using 2nd rather than 4th as a "pre-reverse shift". My opinion: a little more effort to use 2nd vs. 4th for a little smoother reverse engagement. YMMV.

Another way you can do it is to put the tranny in neutral, disengage the clutch, then engage it again, shift into 2nd, then try reverse. Works basically everytime

Syncros bascially allow the outside of the gear (technical term is collar, IIRC) to make frictional contact before the teeth engage. This allows the gears to synchronize without grinding

If I know I'm going to be backing out, I put it in reverse before I shut the car off. Does nobody do that?

most of the time when im backing up im starting the car liek when backing out of a spot and i just put it in reverse before i start the car and that works great for me. Although it was funny when i went to inspection watching the guy try to get my car in reverse becasue all the guys were makign fun of him for not knowing how to drive stick. I guess me telling him how to do it didnt help haha.

I've done that occassionally. I'm just so used to keeping it in first all the time, I never think to do that. But that works as well and doesn't hurt anything

If this related to the problems with the tranny in other posts, I think your clutch is toast.

I feel so unique. I go from 3rd to reverse in my car. I do it because it feels like doing a 2-3 upshift, but moving down and right instead of up and right. Try it. It's fun. Moving off topic, but does anyone else shift needlessly while driving around? I think I change gears way more often than I need to, but I do because it's so much fun!

This is what I do as well. I read through some old posts and started doing the 4th to reverse thing and it has worked flawlessly everytime. If I pull in, I put it and leave it in reverse.

another quick reverse tip is if it goes 'halfway' in, but doesn't engage, ease out the clutch a little bit while you apply some pressure, and it will slip in.

Myself, I go from first gear to reverse without depressing the clutch pedal. And if I'm on a incline, I hold the brake too.

btw, if im moving foward in 1st or 2nd gear, and I stop to back up, I put it in neutral, then in first gear again, then to reverse. Work fine everytime.

Hey geek, I do it too, lol. Especially on winding country roads, it seems like I'm shifting every few seconds. But if you don't have fun with it, why have it?

I'm having the same problem when going into reverse...grinds like crazy, so now whenever I just park wherever as long as it's not on a hill I put it in reverse after I shut er down.

But I'll try the going from 2nd to reverse thing!

this is going to sound kinda out there, but i believe that its not the actual tranny thats causing the grinding.... what i mean is i believe that it is the linkage doing it..
I do know how the tranny works, and i know that reverse is not syncronized...

But when i modified my rod shifter on the 93, i noticed that reverse was INCREDIBILY easier to get into. NO grinding, NO waiting, NO going into other gears, nothing... just a flick of the rist and a pull, and the gear engaged instantly.
I think that the free play in the shift linkage could be allowing the gear to not fully line up, causing the grinding. As its not pushing the gear hard nor fast enough to go in without grinding.

Just My 02....

I thought that too.
But I wanted to fix the free play with a zip tie (as someone showed me up on the temp. forum) But I did'nt because the linkage is in a black box, and its a mess to get down with the exaust line in the way

(BTW, if that guy read this, I need more advide and possibly pictures! thank!)
