Grinding noise at 750-1k rpm

I thought maybe it could be the noise maker too, but after taking it off for a few seconds, and keeping it off it would still make the noise.

could be the throttle plate or the throttle body motor? would have to take off the intercooler to TB pipe to check. Still no codes in the PCM?

I'll have to take that hose off and check the TB when I get a chance....still no pcm codes. Ford put in 5w20 oil. I'm at 108k, so you think that would cause anything? I plan on going thicker next time, theres only about 100 miles since last oil change...should I maybe take it back asap to get thicker oil?

By thicker i assume you mean 5W30? What does the oil filler cap say on your car? Assuming that is original to the engine, that is what you should go by. Probably not an issue to use 5W30 if the oil cap says 5W20, I am on the conservative side and would analyze Blackstone Labs results before and after the changeover to verify any illeffects, aside from the subjective opinions

I looked at FordParts.com and it seems to imply ALL 2011 & up should use 5W30. I thought there might be a changeover midyear, but apparently not. If you have the original oil cap, at least we could crosscheck.

I don't think the oil is to blame here, may be that it is low or overfull, that would cause other issues. If the noise is restricted to the throttle body area, then look for loose bolts or clamps in that area first, then move on to mechanical and electrical possibilities next. I know the TB motors have failed before, but not sure if there were audio symptoms associated with that.

mine does exact same thing. does it right off idle. I think its wastegate rattle. I dont plan on fixing it haha

I seriously doubt that there were any changes to the engine internals from 2010 to 2011 that would warrant using a different oil. I think Ford decided that 5w20 was too 'thin' for a high HP, high temp, turbo motor and simply changed the spec. Maybe they saw a uptick in engine wear or warranty claims or oil usage? Mine being a 2010, I use 5w20 in the winter (northern climate) and 5w30 in the summer. 110,000 miles and no signs of problems. If in doubt, I would use 5w30.

Mine is also a 2010 ~108k miles. On the dipstick it says 5w20, however I am also northern climate (MN) and should make the switch to 5w30 next oil change. Maybe will be sooner than the scheduled date. Bringing the car in tomorrow (Thursday) I will keep you guys posted with what's going on! Again, thanks for all the input. Hoping it's something minor like a bearing or pulley in the ac unit

Car is going in tomorrow to get a new A/C compressor. The only unusual sound the mechanic could hear was coming from the ac unit itself. Hopefully that will clear up all the noises I've had, and I'll be able to relax in a cool breeze. Thanks again for all your help!

Would it be a good idea to bring back to stock before the A/C repair? I know it wouldn't hurt it going back to stock but curious if it's ok to leave the current tune on? Thanks

Are you taking to a dealer? Always return to stock if so. Check after you get it back in case the strategy has been updated. If so, then the tune would have to be updated before putting it back on.

Not a dealer, just a local repair shop. I wouldn't think they would touch the ecu, but not positive

I would return to stock anyway (tunewise). No telling if they need to update a calibration or something. Lots of parts are now software controlled, and software control means calibration updates

Got the car back last night, Ac works great now. However, I am stilling hearing this noise...I'm starting to think I'm getting paranoid over nothing lol

In all seriousness, it didn't sound that bad to me. Mine does it, I pretend its not there.

See if it is coming from the same location. Wonder if it could be a VCT solenoid. Never heard an association, but it is in the area. Listen to it at idle and as rpms climb.
