i know someone's gonna pipe in with their opinion, but in reality, 4 guage is a bit small for that size amp. might wanna step that up a lil bit after you find where it's shorting (i call the firewall).

Well if it's 1800wRMS, then yeah you need to be running like a 0 gauge cable. If it's 1800wPK, then... yeah, a 4 gauge is probably enough. RMS power tends to be about half of PK power.

Power cable grounding out.... PERIOD. Please do run through the car. It is the right way to do it. If you slack on that part and run it through the door jam like some do - eventually it will break the cable and possibly cause a car fire - or the wire to burn right up to where the fuse is located (which should be as close to the battery as possible). Just go run another length of cable to the amp - proper route should be - from the battery - through the firewall - drill a hole if necessary - then put a grommet on the new hole to protect your cable from the sharp firewall hole - run under trim all the way to the backseat and through to trunk. Make sure your power cable is on opposite sides of the car as your RCA cables as it will cause interference. Your choice of using the backseat bolt for your ground is A-OK. What are you using to connect your power cable to the battery? A nice terminal designed for such? Please tell me you didn't just jam the end of the cable down between the terminal and the post or something like that.

I only told him to run the wire outside the car to see if another wire fixed the problem and if it did then he would know the wire was the problem and hopefully run the new wire properly. After rereading my post I see I wasn't clear on that but in my own mind I was clear as day.;)

Yo Hamb.. I will take a pic of where I have mine, it is under the carpet on the passenger side wheel well someplace. I want to say I just attached it and put a bolt over it.. can't remember it has been about 6 or 7 yrs ago now.

i've run power cables under the car exclusively since i installed my first system in the early 90s. i've seen at least three vehicles go up in flames due to a power cable fraying under the carpet somewhere. i'd rather not run that risk. also makes it easier to maintain.

When I run power wires either inside or outside the car I always use some split convoluted insulation over it. Cheap insurance.

jmpsho - my reply wasn't a stab at you. Your post did bring it to my attention to mention it though - I have known alot of people that go through the door jamb - and one whose car caught on fire because he didn't use an inline fuse. When it grounded out - the wire burned under his carpet and caught it on fire.

Time to hijack this thread, I installed a mtx 4 channel running my speakers and it is grounded to a hole I made under the spare tire. Now I have a whine that corresponds with engine rmps coming out of the speakers. I have had my sony 2 channel grounded there for a couple of years with no problems just started when I installed the mtx. What would cause this?btw I have 0 gauge from the battery to the trunck and it then splits to 2 4 guaes

I see that somebody in this thread hasn't had any sort of electrical circuit theory and that the people at the stereo place probably haven't either. I don't think I'd take it back there or recommend them to friends...

My trunk is everything the meaning of timecapsel is. Actually the whole damn car. I will post a gas receipt from 04. Think it was $1.35/gal. but here is what I had for a ground back then.. btw it is recommended to have a short ground. IIRC 18" or less..

/\ those JUST taken. 2 farads of caps and a huge ass amp. Can't remember what it is at this point, it is in there, feeding JL audio door speakers, Kenwood deck speakers, and 2 Memphis 12's. It was good enough to help pull the head KU cheerleader bout 6 yrs ago

That's a fine example or the wrong way to do things.
