Going Catless.....

.... not cause i wanted to though....

I noticed some ratlin' coming from the car today... First thought was a loose converter cover (as that was the case before). Ironically, i was heading back from Autozone to do an oil change....

So i get home, and finish the oil change, and start tapping stuff to see where its coming from..... I tap the back converter.. nothing. I go to the front one.... *rattle*... "hmm.. wait a minute, thats the one that i took the cover off last time... ah shit! "

I dont/cant wait for a maganflow Y-pipe, nor can i throw it right this instant. So my other option is to go catless.

I plan on picking up a couple bullet style mufflers to throw in as resonators.... but i really wish i could keep the sound that i have now.... (im not trying to sound conceded but) Its probably THE best sounding SHO i have heard. No rasp at all... DEEP at idle, an AWESOME tone ANYwhere throughout the RPM range, and AMAZING at WOT.... Im going to be really sad to see this setup/sound go....

Im hoping that i have caught it in time, and none of the converters guts got sucked back into the motor...

Could this also cause poor gas mileage? I dont think the converter failed due to a A/F problem (but it sure could have helped it fail), but yet a battle scar that was given on one of our runs out in the Hill Country. I had been keeping ab eye on that cat to see if anything was wrong (taping it every oil change) but there were no signs. And the car feels as strong as it did a few weeks before....

I hope so.... it felt as if the car was running out at 6500.... but since i put that MAF in, it pulls all the way to 7k. I hope that the catless will help.

I hope i dont loose all that much tq though....

Went ahead and threw a stock Y-pipe back on..... only "problem" ( ) is that now im running open Y.... as the old high flow Y was setup different, and the catback was lined up for THAT Y-pipe.

But i'd rather have an open Y-pipe for a couple days, instead of a blown motor....

I did check to see if anything could come out of the blown cat, but nothing fell out. So, either thats a really good thing, or really bad. Good being, it only broke in half or so. Bad... well, it allready sucked up the small particles.

anyways, just an update.

I suggest you do like I did when mine broke up. Cut a porthole in the cat. Break up and remove the remaining strata. Then weld the cat closed again. You will be fine until you can afford to get a new Y-pipe.

yeah, thats another thing that crossed my mind as well, just kinda forgot about doing it.... And i can do that at school too (as my welder here at the house is fighting with me... )

Just watch your oil consumption. If you suddenly start using more motor oil than normal, you'll know the broken bits did their damage. BTDT.

I did notice some moisture in the old y-pipe... but i figured it was fuel.....

dam it... dam it dam it.....

EDIT: i about had a heart attack.... i went out to check the old y-pipe to see if it was oil... it was just water.... *wipes head*

I wouldn't drive for long with just the Y-pipe. Cold air getting sucked back into the engine is not good for the exhaust valves.

what actually happens when the converter particles are sucked up... i thought the motor just blew or siezed up... are you saying that it develops an oil leak?

can put holes in pistons, break rings, etc....

better yet, think about pouring sand into the intake...

you could always be like me and run the car with as much fuel as possible at a high rpm with the exhaust disconnected. Just run a turn down so you don't melt your fuel pump connector like I did when I just had a y-pipe and no exhaust. The cat will blow itself out. Then you can take a crow bar to the other cat and gut it like I had to do to my other one...

Since it happened to me I'll tell you... The rings bonded to the pistons, and no longer free floated on the cylinder walls. I had oil blow-by like a mother...
