Hello guys,

Just found the forum after a chance meeting with a forum member in a parking lot. Sorry really bad with names but the guy had a really nice white GenII(?).

Anyway I have a 98SHO that need some work done, but of course the most urgent is getting the CAMs sorted. On the V8 website they recommend a guy in Pheonix but unfortunately I don't think he's around any more.

Has anyone got their cams welded or can recommend anyone to do it?

Thanks,

Rav.

Hey you found it :thumb: . Good to see you around. I hope someone will have the answer to your cam question. Either way, welcome to the club.

Yes, welcome. And while I do know of some excellent welders, they don't weld in the vehicle. You'd have to take them out and I don't think you want to go down that road.

There is a specialty Ford performance shop in Scottsdale at the Airpark that would be a good place to start in your qwest. SVC Motorsports, 7333 E. Butherus, 480-998-8885.

YOu know what guys, I was thinking about Brian's SHO being the only gen III in the club and noted that the camfest welder has a stop in Texas per the shoforum homepage. I dont know if 2 sho's is worthy of him coming to PHX, but perhaps a road trip for you and brian wouldnt be out of the question. Seems both of you are on borrowed time.

thoughts?

I too need the cams in my recently purchased '97 welded. I've heard on some authority that the local guy on v8sho.com is currently in Europe and I don't know when he is expected to return. I just can't justify driving 900 miles to get the cams welded when I won't accrue that many miles with regular driving in several months. If anyone figures out a good solution let me know.

If I knew what all was involved, we might be able to help out more. Has anyone written a how-to?

I knew I'd seen this somewhere. I'm an engineer and not a mechanic, but it's way more than I'd want to tackle!

what is so hard? Everything on the page is a step by step on how to take the intake off.....i do that 3 times a year on my 90....can a v8 be all that hard? the only part I dont know is how to MIG weld. Man just looking at those cams makes me cringe though. How could ford make such a blunder?

Surely PHX sho club must have someone who can wield a welder.

I haven't looked at the link and I can lay down a fairly good bead, but I'd sure like to practice on one outside the car first. My MillerMatic 200 can take different size wire, up to .040 I think. It has .035 in it now but I don't know if we would have to get a special wire for the hardness of the gears and shafts. I assume you would do three equadistant beads around each shaft. Anybody have a junk Gen three motor lying around?

Just looked at the link. I can do that. I don't have stainless wire but I'll find some. Everybody, start looking for some cams I can practice on. Then we can have a cam weld party after the rod bearing party.

I know there have been some posts concerning the details of welding the cams that could be located with a a little effort.

I used to own a '90 myself and while it seems pretty compact under the hood the v8 makes it look like the gen I and II's have 4-bangers in them. Fortunately I never had to dive into taking apart my old engine, but this new one makes it that much more intimidating, plus I have absolutely nowhere to do anything of the sort anymore.

We don't let our SHOs intimidate us, just other lesser cars.

And I have the place.. Just need the practice cams and some new wire. The SHOP is now cooled too, for the wussies from up north. :p

1: Tom: thats the spirit man...I wasnt implying you should do the welding, but I'm glad you are open to trying new things. We can all learn together.

2: you would think with all the failed motors, some spare cams are all over the place.

Wow, things look like they are getting sorted out here. I would like to help somehow, but I am really bad when it comes to car stuff. The only stuff I can do is change the oil.

I know a couple of guys on the V8 mailing list that would be willing to talk someone through the whole procedure over the phone.

The other option I have found is that there is a guy in LA that has welded cams before. However, that does look like a 7 hour trip one way.

I'll ask if anyone has any cams that we could test on and get back to the forum in a couple of days.

Thanks everyone hopefully we can get this sorted.

I do need to get my cams welded...and I do have that spare V8 that is alleged to have its cams welded. (My fall back plan, like most, was expensive).

I have alerted two other V8 SHO owners here in town about the issue, and the forum. One of them works in a cigar emporium. I will make the sacrifice and visit him again. The other I chanced upon in a parking lot. Beautiful violet with 80K, he bought for $3K...I was sick.

Okay, I picked up a roll of stainless wire, a spool adapter for the MillerMatic and a tank of Argon. Need to get an adapter for the tank-to-regulator and then something to weld.

He told my friend that the cams don't have issues and if they ever do, you just replace them. He also said welding them makes them weak.

I thought he was one of the best?
