Gen 1 System

Looking for advice, since my complete Prem. system was ripped off, time for a new setup. What size are the front speakers, also, looking for advice for a head unit, no built-in amps needed. Has anyone put any good quality speakers in the front of a Gen 1, such as Focal, or Vifa/Scanspeak, etc? Help me out here, guys.

Well for head units I would go with Kenwood or JVC. Those Ived both had or seen in other cars. Both are excellent. Kenwood last long time and have very good sound quality. As for speakers I dont what size goes in there but kenwood makes good small speakers as well. Pioneer and alpine are good as well. Pioneer are good that have a budget, those are my front speakers. Ive never heard of the brands you mentioned so I cant say anything about them. I have a very good Alpine amp that cost $180 for 4channel at 75watt max per channel, very good can make 5x7's bump. Hope this helps.

For a head unit i would not recommend kenwood i think all there decks are crap i have had had 2 and know a bunch of people who have had kenwoods and they break. since you don't want a pre amp i would definetly recommend clarion or alpine for your deck. for speakers i hope yoo are going with a 5 1/4 component set and then 5X7 in the back. I personally recommend Boston Acoustic pro series Infinty perfects, or it's alittle pricy but polk audio and momo are coming out with a new line it is expensive but it is worth the money it sounds great. but if your not looking to spend a whole lot Ma Audio sells good clear speakers and alpine does too

i have infinity kappa 6 1/2" components in the front of my gen. I, and infinity reference 3-way 6x9's in the back. personally, i think they sound phenomenal (running off a RF Punch 400.4 amp, 50RMS, 100max per speaker).

Crutchfield has the kappa 6 1/2" components on clearance for $200, the RF 400.4 amp for $270, and the reference 3-way 6x9's for $150.
anyone that has heard my system has been thoroughly impressed with the sound quality, and my deck isnt even that good ($200 sony Xplod 4000X i think). my $.02

Red89, I took my panels off and measured the mounting setup. I'm not sure how you can fit 6-1/2" speakers in there, did you do some surgery? I'm looking for 5.25" for the front, as I don't want to cut anything.

As far as decks go, Pioneer is the best for cost/reliability. Sony and JVC suck as far as reliability and Kenwood can be good as long as you go for the expensive ones, but the lower end decks arent too good IMO. For Speakers, thats all in the personal preference of the buyer. Personally, I like speakers with a lot of Bass, so I like Pioneer, Cerwin Vega, and Kenwood. Infinity's, Polks, MB Quart, those are all REALLY good for just great sounding and detailed music, just don't tend to have much bass. This is all just stuff that Ive observed and some Ive heard from my Stereo-loving(obsessed) friends.

sorry, i forgot i had posted here. my 6 1/2" kappas bolted directly into the openings in my door - even the same screwholes. correct me if im wrong, but SHO's (at least '89s) come with 6 1/2" speakers in the doors. i didnt have do do any surgery. i did run new speaker wire for them, which was a big pain in the a$$ - i fed it thru the rubber boot between the dash and the door, which was probably more trouble than it was worth. but im ****, and wanted to do everything the right way

and the 6x9's in the back went in without too much trouble, and no cutting either.
