Actually it is kind of bad. I travel a lot of highway and some city. I average about 25 mpg. On highway only it's about 28 or 29.
I found that when I cleaned my IAB valve, changed the thermostat and reset the computer to redetect the new settings is when I got the better mileage.
I had to replace the thermostat when I replaced my radiator.

Some easy things to do I found, and I'm by no means an expert like a lot of the guys on this board, but keeping my air filter clean, cleaning the IAB (idle air bypass), and running some octane boost once and a while does a good job at keeping mine up.

There is nothing wrong with that. There have been more than a few topics concerning this same issue. You will find many more responses with a little searching.

Ok, let me rephrase. I didn't mean to say that anything was wrong with 20 mpg. It depends on driving style and everything else.

I'm saying that I've seen the polls that some have posted and if you want more mileage per gallon, perhaps some basic maintainence should help.

I found that after basic mantainence, the best way to increase gas mileage, is to lighten up on that right foot! This does take a lot of "fun" out of having a SHO!

If you live in a cold climate (Iowa certainly qualifies) then the longer warmup cycle of the car will decrease your fuel economy because the computer commands a little richer mixture until the car is completely warmed up. I usually see 22-23 mixed driving in the winter and 25-26 in the summer.

whoa ok i'm bringing this back from the dead. i was gone for awhile so now i can look at it.

this time around on gas mileage i got like 17mpg with 70 miles of that being all highway. now if i had bad o2's would that make the gas mileage that bad really? and i replaced my thermostat and gauge temp sensor, where would the ECT sensor be at on these? do i have to take the intake off for it? and also would bad plug wires cause bad gas mileage this bad?

Bad, or lazy, O2 sensors, bad wires, bad ECT sensor........YES. Any and all of them can and will have a negative effect on your fuel mileage. The ECT sensor is located just behind the thermostat housing. Remove your air cleaner cover and the connecting hose to the intake and it is easily accesible.

I get about 15-18mpg... but i also drive pretty aggressive so its cool. I have done all the maintenance (OE Plugs/Wires/O2s/Valve Clearances/Compression testing/Mods in sig) and it has never really gotten better.... with either of my SHOs. Utilizing the power at hand will cause that.

bgjohnson, where u at in iowa? im in the waterloo area.

20 is pretty good if ur doing mostly city, minor highway like me.

this 0 degree windy weather is bs and can make ur mileage go down the drain. if ur around here we can change out ur ect sensor and clean ur intake manifold and iab (maybe even plugs and wires) if u want, doesnt take long, and it helps a bit, when i got new plugs and wires it helped A LOT. and idk about the 02 sensors, i would think they would trip a code if they were bad.

get in touch if u want,

hey, today checked a whole bunch of stuff at the shop in my college(DMACC) and here's what i found.
ECT sensor is fine, .65 volts at 195.
TPS is perfect
MAF volatage is perfect
and did all the tests with a scan tool cyl balance test, system check, timing check, ect...that the computer will allow and found nothing.

sooo i'm just gonna replace the 02's for the heck of it and maybe plug wires, and yes it is gettin hella cold over hear.

and SHO freak, i live in Johnston near camp dodge.

I routinely change my plugs without removing the intake. It takes about half an hour, and really isn't that difficult. I've never tried to change the plug wires without removing the intake. I would imagine that it would be a test of patience.

ive changed my plugs(from the finewires to the autolie pp's) when the intake is on, but not the wires.......doesnt happen that way....... i dont think its possible for the wires to come out and re route them without the intake off. the next thing to check is ur plugs, then wires, cuz wires cost a good hunk of $, unless u ge the ac delco's.

Well...I have done the plus, wires and routing without taking off the intake, it really wasn't that bad, it just took awhile....but it definately can be done.
