for some reason, i need to press on the gas pedal while starting the car, would that mean the fuel pump is going? it happens at least once a day, at first it won't start, then i hold the gas and it starts.

Holding the gas doesnt effect fuel flow on an injected car. It only effects air flow. Most likely "if pushing the gas works" its a choke or IAC problem. Possibly even something stuck in the intake or dirty air filter.

Actually, it will... If you floor it, it will completely cut the injectors. If you read the manual, it says to lightly press the pedal if you are having trouble starting the car. I've had an intake backfire from doing this. Therefore, I am pretty positive it is getting fuel.

Run the codes, your fuel pump is fine. I had a similar condition on my 93 atx, after running the codes, I found the vacuum canister on the back of the intake was bad. After replacing that and clearing the codes it was fine.

start with the easiest things first to see if that fixes your problem. More than likely your fuel pump is fine as you would see many other problems if that were bad.

1: Easiest thing is to clean your MAF electronics, but I dont think that is your problem. Take using security torx wrenches, remove the cover from your maf and gently pull the electronics out...spray with electronics cleaner (looks like brake cleaner at the store but is made for electronic stuff).

2: Next easiest thing is to clean your Idle Air Control Valve which is that cylindrical shaped device on top of your motor inbetween the snakes and the thottle body. It has an electrical connector hooked to it. Taking it off while the intake is on will be tough, but not impossible. see www.shotimes.com for directions. Basically the job of this device is to give the motor air as you start the car sine the throttle plate is closed during startup. The inside gets all gunked up and needs to be sprayed out with berrymans.
