Do I need to use the Ford tool to turn the pump bracket from the tank? Or has anyone else used a different method?

TIA,

No you don't need the special tool. There are ears sticking straight up on the hold down ring. A flat blade screwdriver and a hammer hitting them in a counter clockwise direction will do the trick. I squirted a little PB Blaster on there and it made it easier to rotate the ring. Just wipe it up afterwards with a paper towel.

spray it with pb, wd, or something to lessen the chance of a spark from screwdriver [murphy's law]

On a side note, a spark WILL make it easier to crack that baby open!! :D

But the guys are right. A screwdriver, a hammer, and a few sharp blows should do the trick.

Well, I got to the part of removing the bolts that hold the straps to the car & one of the bolts broke. So half of the bolt & "spacer" (what's that thing called that the bolt screws into?) is stuck in the car and is just a wee bit too big to get out. I might have to take it somewhere to finish it off if I can't get it out.
I'll snap a pic if it will help, but I'm bummed.

I did the exact same thing  . I couldn't drill it out, but i didn't take it anywhere. What i did was manuevered the clip to one side with the broken bolt still in it.Now there was enough room for the new clip. I put the new clip in and searched every store around here that would have bolts;hardware stores, auto part shops, and finally sears which had the bolt. I beleive it was a metric 13mm. When i got the new bolt i bought washers; 7-10 of them. Then i put the strap up, put the bolt in with washers to hold the strap so the tank wouldn't fall down. I screwed the bolt in till it hit the old bolt. Luckily i bought just the right amount of washers :D . THis worked great and hopefully it will work for you. I drove it for many months like that with no problems what so ever. It gives the straps just as much pressure as the bolt would screwed all the way in. Good luck.(my method won't work unless you backed the bolt out about a half inch before it broke.)
