Hey guys(and gals) I've had this problem with my 93 atx ever since i got it.

Every time i get the car to operating temp and it seems to be when the car is nearly empty, i get a bad fuel odor creeping into the passenger cabin of the car when stopped at a stop light. It will quickly dissipate when i get moving again.

There are no codes, the car runs fine. I'm not sure where to start.

Thanks for the help in advance yall.

do you have the acess hole cut in the floor for the fuel pump? if so might have a bad seal on top of the sender.

I guess it doesnt really matter if you have the cut out or not. If you have the ability to use a smoke machine (for testing evap) then that would save you a lot of time.

My brothers Mark 8 had this issue and it turn out to be a vent tube had cracked or wasnt attached any more and was venting into the trans tunnel and coming up through the shifter hole.

Just a maybe.

On these cars, the vent tube connects in front of the passenger side firewall right next to the shock tower. The one on my car was disconnected and with the air intake for the climate system right above it, fumes would get in whenever the car was at idle and stopped. Of course as soon as it started moving, the incoming air would take the gas odor away.

I had this problem with my red 94 - on some pcm's, the chip that drives the charcoal canister purge solenoid will fail, so the canister never gets purged. there is a work-around on shotimes that allows you to have the canister vent all the time. I did this and it solved my problem. (it took a couple weeks to un-saturate the canister, but after that all good.)

..or maybe the 'T' is clogged that connects the charcoal canister to the purge solenoid. That was the problem with my SHO. Easy to clean.

See post #6 in the below thread:

Seems like I have a gas smell in the white car as well. The red car needs the T cleaned out or whatever---it makes a whine noise when you turn the car off and smells like gas.

Sometimes the canister purge valve solenoid will fail as well. The part is cheap and relatively easy to replace.

There's a vac line hooked up to the intake right next to the IAC. Follow this down towards the radiator and you'll run into the solenoid.

The T is in front of the lower rad support right? If I take it off will gas come out?

Unless your charcoal canister is completely saturated, you shouldn't get a lot of gas vapors, but you will have a vacuum leak unless you cap the vacuum line going to the intake. I'm honestly not sure where the other end goes - I think to the gas tank.
