Hi know this question is asked all the time.

My 92 SHO front shocks are shot and I want to replace them. However I am on a college student budget and not after a racing feel. Would like a stage 2 set up what is the best set-up that I can do. Will probally just do the fronts for right now and do rear later. The car is stock for the most part. Hope ot build it up slowly.

The only performance struts you can buy for the SHO are Koni's. Springs may also be worn. You also have to replace the mounts/bearings along with the struts. Since car is stock and on college student budget, I would buy either full struts (includes springs, mounts, fully assembled ready to bolt in) from KYB or Monroe, or just the struts and mounts; either KYB or Monroe Sensatrack would be fine.

Disclaimer: The following is IMHO (but a lot of other people share it).

KYBs are crap, crap struts. Oh they work fine at first... for a few thousand miles... but they are just too under-dampened for the application.

I like the Monroe Sensa-traks. I have those and Moog cargo coils (CCs) on my wife's 95, and while it wasn't as stiff as the Tokico/Eibach combo I had on my 94, it is more than sufficient and still quite comfy. If you can find a deal on some Quick-struts by Monroe, jump for those; those are the struts, springs, mounts and bearings all in one neat little package that you need not assemble. I've seen them for about ~$140 each, which is a heluva deal considering the strut is $60-70, the springs are $80 for two, so one for $40, the mount is $40, new boots/bounce stops and insulators are $15 and you have to rent spring compressors and all that crap to put it together.

KYB's are fine with stock springs, and would be my first choice. I would not use cargo coils if I were staying stock; they raise ride height, and by cutting them down the ride is very stiff versus stock springs. Some have used KYB with lowering springs on SHO's and said they softened up after a while.
I have had same model KYB's on my 98 Diamante for 65k with Vogtland lowering springs, HD sway bars, etc.. and they work great. IF I were staying stock, I would get the KYB full strut over the Monroe; the Monroes I have seen installed raise the ride height over stock.

KYB tend to not hold up well with Gen1/2 SHO's.

Moog's raise hte car up becasue you are being raised to stock height after years of sagging. Cutting a dead coil does not affect spring rate.

Not if you cut the right side. If you cut the dead coils (the ones spaced very closely together), the spring rate will not be affected until well after the bump stop. Read up on progressive spring rate theory. If you cut off the far apart coils, then yes, you're going to affect spring rate. Also, you're an idiot.

There's an $80 rebate on four Monroe Quickstruts ($40 on two) if purchased by the end of the month. My recollection is that rockauto has the rears for about $112 each and the fronts for about $125 each. There a 5% discount on rockauto purchases noted elsewhere on the site.

KYBs are garbage in all generations SHO. As hawkeye said, great at first, but the honeymoon is over real quick.

You owes me a keyboard, mine gots coffee spit all over it. :laugh_ti:

Now, back to struts. I'm with the general concensus, KYB's suck on these cars. They might work well on a Diamante, a Lotus, a Ferrari, or a 68 Rambler, but it doesn't mean dick unless you drive one of those. I'm guessing you don't, because you asked specifically about your SHO.

My SHO specific advice on a budget would be Monroe quick struts. Get them from SHOSource, support a vendor.

You better watch out, you might get an infraction from insulting a forum member like St Louis SHO did to me. I was sent a PM to chill out about it from a post of humor, quoting humor or what I thought was.

Other than that, AutoZone would be happy to hire you with your mighty spring knowledge!

I defy anybody to give me a logical, factual argument as to how cutting the live coils of a spring doesn't make you an idiot.

Well, being a neophyte doesn't make you an idiot, just ignorant. Spreading ignorance, does however tend to make one an idiot.

And FWIW, I have KYB's on cut Moogs that have lasted years without any problems and still nice and firm. :thumb:
