So I've been pretty serious about buying a SHO for about a month now. I've done my research and determine exactly what I want, and I finally found it but this particular model is about seven hours away from me.

I'm graduating college in about a month and I'm 100% willing to make the trip down, my only concern is that the car wont last on the lot another month. So my question is: should I contact the dealer about it now to let them know I'm interested, or should I just let it lie until I'm available to drive out to the dealership?

Thanks for help guys!

Send them a deposit.

So the thing is it's used (2014), so while I'm extremely interested and motivated to buy it, I feel like I need to see it in person/get my hands on it before I know its the one.

Unless they are in the 1%, they will not hold a used car a month for anyone, even with a deposit.

I would call them and ask to speak to the general sales manager. I would tell the gsm that I am a serious buyer but I'm 7 hours away and I am thinking that I really need to see it in person before I commit to it. His response to that will let you know whether you want to work with that dealer or not. He may respond with anything from a brush-off to a question about how they can make you feel comfortable without having to make a 'feel it out' trip. If his response is one that makes you feel like you can work with them, tell him about the things that you would want to check out in person (whatever those are) and see if he is willing to have his internet sales guy take photos, make a video while driving it, etc. etc. - whatever it would take to make you comfortable. Build a relationship. If they do what you want, then you have to be willing to make a decision. If you build enough of a relationship, you may get them to hold it for you for the remaining time.

Where is the car? Maybe a follow member is relatively close and willing to take a look at it and give you some feedback.

I only bought my 2013 a few months ago. I was really hoping for a newer car but it's tough finding the right combination of options/colors/miles/etc if you are buying used. I really wanted Deep Impact Blue with the grey suede and the 402A package. Good luck to me and ended up settling on a low mileage Tuxedo Black/grey suede optioned out car that was 10 miles from me. My advise is if you are dead set in certain colors or options either pull the trigger if you find one, especially the rarer colors(about half the 2013s at least where black) or be patient as it could be a while.

This is GREAT idea! On the off chance that it's close to me, I'd be happy to go look at it for you. Where is the car located?

Always willing to look, and maybe even set a client visit nearby if not too far away

Some very good advice out here, I would add one thing, they really don't make many of these cars they are in fact relatively rare. For instance in 2012 they only made 1,808 Taurus SHO's and only one of those is Kona Blue Metallic. So someone may be driving to work in a 1 of 1 and not even know it. If that was a Mustang it would be sitting in specially built garage in a hyperbolic chamber gaining value by the minute. My point is as stated above if its exactly the car you want, go buy it now and live with it. You can always trade it in are sale it to someone else.

That was part of the point I was trying to make. If you are looking for a a specific color and or options you have to be ready to buy as some are quite rare and you might have to wait a while to find another. There were just under 7592 2013s about half were black. But if you wanted to find a 2013 in Deep Impact Blue with Grey suede and it's 106. Add PP or adaptive cruise and massaging seats your prob in the single digits.

Maybe I've just been looking at this car for too long, but is that the standard ruby red? This particular model is a 2014, maybe its the lighting, but it seems like its a little darker.

Can't see the pic but Ruby was the only color anywhere near red for 2014 SHOs. Lesser Tauri could be had in Sunset Metalic

Just wait and if it's still there then go check it out. They are not that rare. If it's still there you can probably work a better deal.

On the color, my 2013 is listed as Ruby Red Metallic Dark Tint. As for the drive, have them email you everything you want to see and if you're interested, let them know your serious, but *** is your bottom dollar price so they don't think they have you on a hook because you took a 7hr drive. ****, last Friday I drove 6hrs total to adopt a 10 week old Shepherd Lab mix and it's probably the happiest I've been in a long time. You never know what you're getting until you find it and see it for real. If nothing else, plan on hitting some stuff on the trip so even if the car doesn't work out you have some fun.

Good point on getting a deal in writing before you take a trip. But even with that many dealers will sell the car out from under you without thinking twice.
