Well...for an update I ran it for 300 miles. It didn’t leak, but is whining a little bit. Also, the vent appears to be completely clogged. When I pulled the drain plug there was some pressure that escaped, then the oil wouldn’t drain at all until I removed the fill plug. So I’ll have to unclog that I guess. Hopefully I can get a few more miles out of it.

How much oil came out...it's likely you've got the black crisco thing going on...not much life left in it at that point.

Right... If you’d read the thread...it was nothing but sludge when I discovered the problem. I then flushed it several times with ATF, refilled with gear oil and ran it for 300 miles and was just giving an update. Still had the 18oz, so at least it’s not leaking. Still making a little noise though.

Sorry not trying to be smart at all. Just reading your post it seems as though you didn’t see the thread opener which dealt with the sludge. I’m pumping in 16-17 oz and pleased that that much was still there after 300 miles. If the seals are good then the bearings can’t be too loose at this point. I’m still doubtful of the long term though. And I’ve got to clear that vent or it’ll certainly cause issues with the seals eventually.

Keep it well lubricated, the idler shaft bearing is probably toast. That is what causes the foul smell due to excessive heat. Eventually the fluid breaks down so to the heat. Then the pinion bearing starts to fail which is usually the whine you end up hearing. You are right as well, all platforms with the 3 axis ptu’s tend to have reliability issues. I hope you get some miles out of it until you can afford to replace it. Ford did do us a dirty with this one. I have read that ford had these ptu’s always equipped to be serviced in other markets around the world, mainly sandy or places with very hot climates.

Anyone have (or have had) a PTU on the bench? I’m not having much luck clearing the vent. I can feel the cap and turn it, but can barely see it with an inspection mirror. I dug all the nasty sludge that began as gear oil out from around it, but there doesn’t seem to be a hex or anything to grab with a wrench or socket. Some have a hose as I’ve seen on videos but this doesn’t. I don’t want to pry on it and break it. Does it thread in somehow, or just pull out or something?

Its not threaded, just pressed in. You can pry it out. Although that's going to be quite a chore with the PTU in the car. 2y0200503 121312 2y4mzK4A3U26zNR7ib

WOW! That’s what I needed. Guess I don’t dare pty it out...don’t know how I’d get anything put back. Don’t really know how to go about clearing the vent now.

Just a suggestion...buy the vent tube extender that you find on the 2016+ cars. You can find them for about $20. It brings the vent up to the engine bay. Then spray some degreaser down the tube and let it do its work.

Here’s a pic of the vent taken apart.
The cap is pressed on around the edges.
the rubber flap is the “check valve”

That’s AWESOME thx guys. I think I’ll try to get that cap pried off and hope the ****** is still intact and put a hose on. Great write up xsport. Did you install the new unit yet and if so do a write up on it? I’m certain it’s just a matter of time for me.

2010 SHO PP. Splurged and bought it new (wanted one nice new car before the kiddos came along). This car has had a pampered life that every car would aspire to. Only spent a couple nights outside the garage, just one track day when it was about a year old with a half dozen runs, meticulous care and maintenance. Its just shy of 80,000 miles and......Looks like the PTU is about done. Since the twins came along, I haven't had time to keep up on here or I could have seen it coming and maybe prevented it.

The wife and kids were on the highway last fall when they just about gagged from the smell, had to open the windows. When they got home I drove it and everything seemed fine, so I assumed it was a vehicle in front of them. Well...two months later (next time I drove it) it was whining. I did some research on this list and apparently the smell was the PTU giving up and boiling what was left of the sludge that used to be gear oil out the vent, onto the exhaust and getting sucked into the HVAC.

I needn't have bothered wrapping my drill in plastic when I drilled the PTU to tap a drain plug, as NOT A DROP of oil came out. I don't really have the 2 grand to get it fixed right now, so I'm gonna try to limp it along for a while. I had the car up on jack stands (all 4 wheels), so I ran it in drive and flushed it 5 times with ATF. At least it wasn't thick at the last. Filled it back up with 75W140 along with a little ATF and have about 200 miles on it so far. Not sure how much longer I'll get out of it.

Where is the recall??? No way a major drive train component should fail at 80000 miles on a pampered car.
My PTU ON MY 2010 gave it up at 188,000 miles.
