When i have the flywheel resurfaced does the machine shop have to take off the dowel pins or do they leave them in.

I'm sure they will if you ask them to do it, but you can do it yourself. Round peg goes in the round hole.

I got mine back with the dowels taped to the back of the flywheel, which suited me just fine. I was able to clean up the dowell holes and add a smidge of anti-sieze so they'd come out easily next time.

Whatever you do, make sure they don't cut the dowels flush with the friction surface. I have a big rusty paperweight in the basement thanks to some ******* machine shop.

The dowel pins must be removed in order to cut the flywheel.
They should re-install them for you.

And im going to use valvoline atf should i get the maxlife or just valvoline atf.

It really depends on what your tranny likes. I hope you took the trans apart and replaced the edoff roll pins. How many miles on it? Any notchy, or grinding when shifting? Do any of the seals leak?

If the tranny shifts well, and does not leak, I would use regular ATF.

If you have a vise, you can remove them yourself to prevent the machine shop from whacking them off.

Any machine shop that does flywheels will have a special tool that pulls the dowel pins. Just tell the machinist you want him to pull and reinstall them for you; should not be a problem. Measure the dowel pin height and the pocket in the pressure plate to make sure they are not so tall that the pressure plate does not seat fully. Grind the pins off a bit if needed.
