Looks like my alt/ac belt idler/tensioner needs replaced. I've read that I can either use the bearings from a V8 SHO pulley or just use the whole pulley itself. Has anyone actually done either of these and driven the car afterwards?

And I thought swapping the pulleys would be easy. HA!

I havn't done that, but on my 90 when my idler locked up, i improvised(i always try to improvise :D ). I went and bought a pully from autozone that was supossed to fit...but the bearing was smaller so it didnt fit. I simply took the sleeve the bearing slides over, and ground it down till it was the right size to fit in the smaller bearing :D cost about 15 bucks total, and about 30 minutes time. I guess you will have to gauge for yourself if you feel comfortable doing this, but if you can get it right it saves a lot of money wink

FWIW, you can still get the pulleys via Torrie at FPN. I just bought one back in October. A bit pricey, but beats the guess work.

Went to the Ford dealer yesterday and looked up some pulleys. Original one is around $110 I think. One for a V8 SHO is around $40. Guess which one I ordered.

So we'll see come Monday.

Make sure you got the idler pulley and NOT the tensioner pulley. And I really can't remember but I think you need the GEN 3 bearing sleeve that the bolt goes through. Must be longer or something.

The F6DZ-8678-A that came was something totally different than what I expected, a tensioner of some kind, about 1.5" in diameter.

Then she came out with a pulley very similar to the one in the pic above with a different PN that at the time I thought I could make work. After bringing it home I realized I don't think I can.

We thought maybe the F6DZ-8678-A was boxed wrong, so she ordered another.

the saga continues...

The problem is you are getting the GEN 3 tensioner pulley. You want the Gen 3 idler pulley. The idler pulley has the exact same bearing that the Gen 1 and 2 tensioner pulleys have.

Yes that idler pulley is off of my '97 ve8 motor. They have three of them. The '99 pulleys are a bit different as they have a lip on the back edge but they are interchangeable.

I will send you a picture of the two different types. Tomorrow I will look at the actual pulley but I don't think it has any numbers on it other than the actual bearing NSK part number.

Second one came in and it was wrong as well. Unless someone can get me the correct part number for the Gen III pulley, I'm going to break down and buy the 3.0 pulley.

I had read that, but it was before I had the part in may hand and for some reason I didn't realize they were the same part numbers. Oh well.
