So, buying this car I knew it didn't run, and that the owner had his mechanic do a A/C bypass a few months before it stopped working. He told me that he was driving one day and that the heard a clunk. well I figured out what the clunk was....

SHO015
yeah I didn't take that cover off, it's broken.

SHO018

I guess he didn't get rid of the A/C stuff, he just used a different size belt.

So my plan of action is using my spare engine replace the parts down there and put the correct belt on. If I can get it to work, then I'm going to attempt to do a 60k...or bring to NESHO, haven't decided yet. I would really like to do it myself, but I've never really done a lot of mechanical stuff. I did buy this car to learn tho :) Well it was nice to finally get my hands dirty and spending some time on it. I just thought I'd share, also if you have any input, that would be greatly appreciated :)

Like I said, I'm new to this stuff, so I'm not sure, but thats what he said happened, so I was wondering if the fact he used a different belt? Idk I'm just going to put it back to the way it should be, and see if it works?

From the way that looks with the rub marks, the mechanic may have used a different pulley.

Got a pics of the pulley you took off??

actually The pulley was already gone, because he had brought it back to the mechanic, so maybe the mechanic realized he used the wrong one? and took it off??

SASHO is right. I did an AC bypass on my ATX as well, and I've had no problems to date. You gonna freshen up the motor your picked up, and drop it in, or swap out parts?

Got to spend more time on it today.

taking the pulley off the spare engine I managed to do this
SHO019
hurray for lifetime warranty on craftsman tools :)

well the pulley was a bit rusty, but nothing a wire brush wheel can't fix :)
SHO021

So we got the CPS off the spare engine...does anyone know why theres a random wire??

SHO029

Well we called it a day after we couldn't get the middle belt cover off.
We're going to attempt that tomorrow...anyone have any suggestions on how to take middle belt cover off. Our plan of action is to get the belt off, replace the belt and the sensor, and put it back together and see what happens. btw. shophoenixproject is a wonderful place.

I also found this picture humorous...
SHO022
the one on the right came off the car ha..

well that's it for now. Any advice would be awesome. :)

Mike, that's no random wire. :oogle:

When you replace the crank sensor (the sensor with the shredded wire in your hand), the gap between the timing pulley vanes and the sensor is .030 inches. Any more and it might not start.

You might as well replace the sensor, and the waterpump, and the timing belt, and the front crank seal while you're in there. You already know how much fun it is taking the front of that motor apart while it's in the car.

well see the thing is, I wanna see if it will run first, before I put more money into basically a front 60K. get where I'm coming from? I don't really have to put everything back together to see if it'll run, and if it does, I can go back and do the front 60K. I mean it's not my car I'm using so I have the time :)

It'll run, unless there is something else strange with it. Water pump is the only other part of the 60k that you won't buy to see if it runs. Just buy it, and if its still broken, send me a PM, I could always use a spare waterpump. :) And that middle cover has a bolt in the far rear corner, dont know about the autos, but mine is a 5 speed, and one is right behind a pulley. And it still takes a weird angle to get it in there. Good luck.

Once you get it timed, try to start it before putting the front of the motor back on.

Edit, just idle it...dont rev it.

Then you can take back off the timing belt and get the front seal taken care of without having to take EVERYTHING apart...

AAHHH so close. we got the cover off today, and look what I found!!!

SHO033

ah ha ha... heres part of the sensor.

SHO032

mmm broken sensor.

SHO031

so i had that extra sensor, but that wire was sticking out of it, so I'm going to order a new one. we tryed it anyway, and put everything together (new belt too) and it almost turned over, but didn't, and after a check, there was no spark still. so off to Rock Auto I go. So I felt like we were so close, and it just knocked me down haha.. Hopefully with a new sensor, it'll work

turn over... as in cranking.. or turning on (running)?
Im assuming, running...

Are you sure the cams/crank are timmed correctly. (cams at 12, crank at 5)

Yeah it's cranking, but not running. we made sure the cams and crank were timed correctly. lined everything up.
