1994 SHO 3.2 ATX new engine runs great, just failed CA. smog by 2 ppm high HC at high speed OK at low speed but both are toward the high side numbers. Please if any suggestion on how to fix high HC's. No codes, new ignition parts, rebuilt engine, great compression.

You can try pulling the spout connector. I'm sure there is smog info buried in here somewhere if you use the search button above.

I'll Try

I'll find it and give that a try. I have a spare and will disable it so it looks OK. I know in the old days you could just retard the timing a little and that would help. Does pulling the spout retard? Also should I pull it just before I take it down to get checked or pull it and just drive it around some first? Thanks

Yes, pulling the spout retards the timing. It disables the computer's ignition advance timing.

You can drive with the spout out, it'll just be down on power. Usually people just pull it around the block.

pulling the spout connector will reduce emissions by 1/3 to 1/2 in the examples I have seen. unless the guy doing the emissions test is unusually observant, they will not notice the reduced power.

I would just pull it down the street from where you get it tested. It will retard timing immediately. It's just a blade electrical plug with a plastic top. Easy enough to find and pull

Thank All Of You

Just removed the spout drove 25 miles to work on freeway, then 25 miles on surface streets to smog test. It passed with flying colors, then drove around corner and installed spout. Glad the spout is hard to see and smog guys don't do may SHO's. I am old school and retarding the timing would help but if timing was to far off with a light it wouldn't pass. I will do this on all my SHO's and plain Taurus's from now on if a problem. I want to thank all that sent info. The next option was register in Arizona. Thanks Again I will post before and after numbers later.
