I believe everyone who has tried this has hit a dead end and given up. Those who are interested may do well to try working one yourself instead of waiting for someone else to do it. Fact is, first one to get it done properly is going to make a lot of sales and money.

Although this is true, some people just don't have time, money, or knowledge to do such things. Myself included. If I could figure out exactly how to make this fiberglass mold, and have a piece made from it I would. But like I said I don't have the know how.

There should be nothing to the electronics stuff. I have e-mailed him before. When he e-mailed me back he said he had a lot of projects going on and didn't have time to work on it. Last I knew he was trying to find someone to make copies in abs plastic form his mold. I don't know if he wants his info given out publicly so if you want to try and get hold of him send me a pm and I'll give you the info you need.

The electronics is the part that I was worried about. Can you pm me some details on what needs to be there and what doesn't. I think I can make the mold myself. Thanks.

I had it all put together and I had the rear defrost work. That was it. The small cable that connects the buttons to the actual radio was where I hit a dead end. Printed plastic with printed circuits inside it. I didnt know how to get around it.

I was so close... I still wish that I could try it again but it took alot of time to fab up and all I have left is a bunch of wires spliced together from the seperated radio halves, and a broken up faceplate when I removed the Eclipse's cage.

Argh... now I want to try again... anyone want to give me a 99 radio to mess up

As I remember from the original postings. You would have to keep all the electronics intact. The part that controls the radio will have to be layed on top of the electronic climate control with a piece of material between them to prevent short circuts. Other than that I believe that would do it.

If you can make the mold. Would it be possible for you to also make the positive of the mold (the actual face). And perhaps mass produce it. I did some research online, and it seems that there are a number of ways one can make a plastic piece from a mold. Including DIY vacume plastics. The materials needed are not that exspensive and pretty common. Heres a link.

From what I saw it was alot harder than just a faceplate. This has been discussed before. If that could be made you still have the wiring debacle and then covering the circuit boards so they don't short out. I did that too, lost the speedo for a couple days before I bought new fuses. Weird the radio fuse cuts out the speedometer.

Why doesnt the Gen III's have a seperate Audio Troubleshooting/Upgrade section???

Perhaps if someone gets in touch with the guy. He can give us some more details of how to go about doing this. I just would really like it, been waiting for this for a while.

I PM'd chrome_rust pry over 4 months ago to see if there was any update. No response as of yet.

I have been thinking of playing around with my remnants again and see if i can get it to work, without a radio in it at least.

Update

Bringing this one back from a couple months ago. Here is what my radio looks like now, all installed and working just fine. I've had it like this for about 8 months now.

NikonPhotos003

Possibly this Christmas break I will look into making new cables so that little pile of electronics can be remotely mounted, far far away. Anyways thought I'd share. I know JSIL1, and Shogun_it have also done this. How many others are out there?

Sure it doesn't look exactly perfect, but alot of people think it's cool that it's been fabbed into the ashtray.

I've got that setup in my 97. To my knowledge I was the first person to ever do it. I bought my SHO and within a week or so had my CD player and crossover mounted in my arm rest, then decided that I didn't like that. so a few weeks later while I was in calculus class thinking about my SHO instead of paying attention a crazy idea came to me, I don't remember there being anything behind where that ash tray is. so as soon as I got home I took the car apart again just to see if there was any possible way it would work, it looked promising, so I went for it. turned out great. I posted my results to the V8 e-mail list. it seems that it was a while before I ever heard of anyone else who had tried it and since then I've seen several other installs. I put my CD player up higher and had to cut into the radio bezel some (every once in a while I regret doing that, but I bought a backup piece) and mounted my crossover below it. then a while later I came back in and put a switch panel below that which has controls for my cutout, lights, bass boost on the sub amp and stuff like that.

It actually looks better now than it did then, this was right after the project was done, since then I've cleaned it up a bit and put the metal label plate around the bass boost ****.

Same here. I had my console apart within a day or two of buying it.

Console 5

Way to hard to change songs while driving.

Not if their not IR... I still hardly use mine. Only if I have the music playing and I'm outside the car, either working on it or at a get together. Then I just use it instead of getting inside.
