Sad story...the previous owner of my '92 green fun machine had hard wired the radiator fan, using a toggle switch. (I think, after reading the CCRM/IRCM sticky, that this mechanically illiterate fellow (at least when it came to Ford EEC-IV systems) had a fuel pump issue, got an IRCM at a wrecking yard and didn't match it up, code-wise, so the fan then didn't work. I can only guess.)

To do this (I've had the problem fixed, new fuel pump, new IRCM, rewiring the fan again) the guy hooked up the fan to the battery. In doing this he used, for the positive feed, the "auxiliary" wire that is part of the positive battery cable. What I can't find (looked in my Chilton manual) is what is this auxiliary wire supposed to be hooked up to? The car runs OK, and all of the electronics and accessories seem to function properly.

Edit: I see there are no replies yet. Isn't anyone willing to open the hood on their Gen. II and look?

Just asking! :thankyou:

That extra wire comes on most aftermarket batt cables, just cut it off if your not using it. i recently replaced both neg and pos cables on my car and they both had the extra little wire on it.

My son's car is wired the same way. On my 93 ATX the IRCM code is J. My son's should be the same but some how I doubt that it is.

The bad thing about hard wiring the fan is that eventually it's going to melt the connector at the fan. It's not designed to handle the power directly from the battery. I already replaced my son's fan unit once because of that problem.

After having several electronic issues repaired at a local Ford dealer after getting my SHO home, including the the hard-wired fan, I was real glad to hear the fan come on by itself after a warm run on a sunny day. My new car had both fan (as you see, being hard wired by the previous owner) and fuel pump issues. It also had issues with the ECT, which I imagine tells the PCM when to send a signal to turn the fan on. Seems like the correct IRCM is critical on these EEC-IV Fords.
