Yesterday evening, my car developed a noisy exhaust. Upon further inspection, I decided to remove the donut gasket at the end of the Y-pipe. That thing was trashed beyond reason. Went to Ford and they said it was discontinued and the closest one is in the middle of Missouri and could be here tomorrow. I decided to go down to NAPA and they took some measurements and found a replacement generic gasket that fit the bill perfectly. However, the exhaust is still noisy. I got under the car with the engine on and found the noise to be loudest at the rear header where the Y-pipe connects to it. I did a quick search and found a post that said there is no gasket in this location. Is this true?

Also... Just so I dont have to keep getting in and out of the underside of the car... What size bolts are used to connect the headers with the y-pipe? Looks like a 10 or 12mm.

Yes, you are correct, there are no gaskets from the manifolds to the y-pipe.

As far as the nuts for the manifolds(studs), IIRC, they are 15mm. Not unless they have been replaced.

What type of noise is it? An exahust leak? Rattle?

Its a definate leak. The car is very loud inside and out and while sitting next to a parked car with a small rev, it sounds like my Speed Triple. :nut:

Start the car with it up on stands and get under it. That's really the only way to find the leak.

Feel around with your hand to feel where the air is coming out.

Usually the nuts on the exhaust studs are 15mm.

Just had the same problem with my y pipe, it ended up being 3 things, cats were rotted out and leaking on the bottoms, the y pipe was leaking at the ****** there and the mufflers had holes. My fix was the following: remove y pipe and cut heat shields off, wire brush all rust off and wire brush the ****** so it had a smooth mating surface, go to napa and get muffler patch puddy its in a round can and costs like 3 bucks a can. I puddyed the cats and muffler and it worked great. Then i took my new ****** gasket and put that 650deg orange rtv all over it and put it together, then put a ton of it all over the place once it was together. Finally after numerous attempts of fixing my leaks I found out how to do all this. BTW once i found one leak i found another, then fixed that and found another so be prepared:rofl:

Well, I may be computer illiterate but I can not find threads about duel exhausts. Here is the rub. My y-pipe and cats are fine. I had the resinator (sp?) removed last year, the weld broke all the way around leaving me with an open exhaust through downtown! OUCH! My ears!

Today I went to get my favorite car inspected to discover that the right dynomax had blown a hole in it. Age/age... I got rejected and was told he could put a stock muffler on Monday, for about 90 bucks. So I will have one dynomax and one stock muffler, YUK! They are closed tomorrow. So much for cruising on the 4th! :( On my way back home I thought maybe I would be better off having the entire exhaust from the cats back made into duels, or, have the muffler shop in town that custom makes exhausts for all sorts of cars/ especially stangs, converting singles to duels, replace everything from where the resinator used to be back either like factory or in duels using new GT mufflers off the stanger? Any advice?? I am not into patching mufflers ot pipes with goop as that only gets me by the inspection and maybe a mile or two more.

I love this car and it annoys me that every time I pull into a shop around here they all look like they have seen a ghost! If I knew all I could know about the SHO and had a shop to maintian them in this valley I would make a fortune as most end up in the crusher because mechanics shy away from them... My clutch will need replacing soon. God only knows where I am going to get that done!

For the record, the donut gasket is available at most auto parts stores as the Fel-Pro 60641, Walker 31372 or my favorite as the quietest and longest lasting, the ROL EG24807 for $4.99 from O'Reilly.

I concur with the Walker 31372 gasket; it's a much better product than the Felpro. My guess is your problem is you have a Catalytic converter leaking, a crack in one of the flanges, or a stripped stud. If you have a few bucks to spend, this would be a good time to upgrade to an aftermarket Y-pipe assembly. Summit Racing has the Magnaflow, which is a good unit for the price. New header studs are available from Ford, or aftermarket.

Lonewolf IIRC Dynomax mufflers have a lifetime warranty..... all you gotta pay for is the labor for replacement.
My 95 catback developed leaks after only 3 years. Called Summit (where I purchased from) and they shipped out an entire catback system to swap in!
Kudos to those guys!!
