Hey guys, I was searching the web for info about wires and the SHO. I ran across this. Many of you may have arleady read it. I'm sure everyone knows moisture and oil in the wells causes problems. What impressed me about this "article" was how it emphasized the quality of the install as much as the wires themselves. It's worth a read.

Just for the record, all engines with multivalve heads have deep wells for the spark plugs and none of them have drain holes for the oil or moisture that may get into the wells. The only area below the plug that the material could drain to would be the cylinder and that must be quite well sealed. They must be more accustomed to the side spark plug locations on the old-school pushrod engines. Not too bright for them to say that.

Toyota uses a threaded tube that goes through the hole in the valve cover and threads into the head. The valve cover is held onto the head with large nuts threaded onto the tubes. It's a very good system and I am working on adapting that system to the SHO motor.

So is there any way to "vent" our plug wires? Or shouldn't I worry about it. How can I seal them better, seeing as I'm putting on a new set this weekend?

Thanx

I think they were saying that all sealed wells will tend to accumulate moisture, as it condenses in place, then can't evaporate when the engine's warm because the well is so well-sealed.

Seems it'd be cool to invent a system wherein there's a path for vapors to escape the well as the engine heated up - of course, it wouldn't work for oil buildup, but it'd be a start.

The funny thing is that if you use the proper fitting plug boots on the Motorcraft plug wires (and don't wash your engine with pressurized water) you won't have any moisture to vent. If moisture is getting in there, it means the plug boots aren't sealing properly. If Magnecor was experiencing this condition, it was because their product's plug boots weren't sealing properly. Doh!

The fact that Magnecor has acknowledged the particularity of the SHO plug & wire setup, and has modified its wires to better fit the SHO, is a positive thing, I would have to think.

Who knows, maybe some other aftermarket part companies will take a cue from that and give the SHO more than just a passing thought.

I don't think you gain performance with different sparkplug wires, only restore lost performance due to failing wires. I like the Taylor 8mm wires, fit nice, look good, and only about $80 from Summit.

FWIW, I tried the Magnecor wires a long time ago. I sincerely hope that they improved their design since then. I did not get a chance to find out if they allowed moisture to accumulate in the plug wells due to the fact that they misfired into any metal that they came close to. My car ran horribly from the time they were installed till the time (a few days later) that they were replaced with a brand new set of Motorcraft wires. To top it off, they refused to refund my money because the wires had been installed. That was total bs .

And before it is suggested, they were installed in the correct order.
