Did you notice any operating problems before you checked this code? OBD I code readers are not great to get proper readings vs the regular CEL flashes. If the car runs fine, I would clear the codes, run it and see if anything comes back.

The easiest way is to disconnect the battery for a few minutes to drain the system of power and any residual in the system. When you start it up again it may run a little funny as the adaptive computer relearns idle and such. I find it hard to believe that both cars would issue the exact same code. I think the code reader is suspect if this is the case and you need to jumper the pins and read the codes from the dash. You will see in a few recent posts that some of us have posted similar issues with OBD I code readers on these vehicles. --they stink

Here's a link on how to pull codes from the car and a list of 2 & 3 digit codes

the easiest way to clear the codes is to pull the jumper while the codes are being flashed out - that is the most consistent and quickest way to reset them.

ok.. so i tried both methods of clearing the code. worked briefly then cel came on again .pulled codes as per phoenix project and still showing code 564 . what would be the most common cause for this . btw i have a 94 trans and d4ui installed if that makes a difference ..thanks again pat

My first guess is bad ground or a bad circuit in the ccrm or a fault in the fan circuitry... never had this code but have had all 3 problems over the years

that should be telling you that the low speed fan does not work or not work right - since it is complaining of a circuit failure, it could just be that the ccrm draws too much or too little current on the signal side, so the pcm thinks that the circuit is bad. I would start with replacing the ccrm.

edit: that 564 code is not supposed to light the CEL - are there no other codes?

My guess is the CCRM; here is how Ford says to diagnose it (from their powertrain diagnostics manual, assuming I can get this forum software to work for me):

thanks, Chris.
Welcome, Fred. :)

OP - You may want the pinouts, here they are; the CIRCUIT column contains the individual circuit numbers as well as the wire colors (black/orange, tan/red, brown/lightgreen, whatever) which should help in identifying wires & pins:
