engine wont stay running

i went to start my car and nothing happend so i tried to jump it and it started up but when i turn on my head lights it dies every time any idea what the problem? :cry: is pleas help me fast .... :cry: :cry: :cry:

bad alternator...need a new one

it doesnt put out much juice, but puts out enough to run the car. When you add extra load (lights are a fairly big load) it takes all the juice made, so mr sparky plugs have none. Then car dies.

AZ or advance will check it for free on the car...they can also test your battery at the same time.

yeah def souds like a alt issue here. Um.. I got mine at pep boys and got it for like $60 if i remember correctly.

I am not saying your wrong, but I believe AZ and advance run like $130 for new.

Some people recommend getting it rebuilt...you could check out that route too.

this is strange

thanks for the help .....................but it was not the alternator. it was the head light switch shorting out and because it has a breaker built in it shut the car down. sounds weird but it's true i got a new switch and its fine ........

but i wanted to be sure so i pluged the new one in and the car would not start . so i jumped it and it started again and when the old switch is turned on car dies and then won't start but with the new one in it starts no problem and stays running.... :

That is quite strange...never really heard of that happeneing. Good to know though.
