Yes I did a search and came up with nothing. I'm buying a '93 MTX and the temp. usually reads at the R. Is this normal on an SHO. The Ford dealer seems to say so.

The Ford dealer is actually right.

The exact position that the temp guage needle points to during normal operation will vary from car to car, depending on variables such as the guage mechanism, the temp sending unit condition, the thermostat's condition, the overall condition of the car's electrical system, etc....

What is important is to watch for variations from what has been determined, in the past, to be normal for each particular car. The "R" is near midrange of the indicated "NORMAL" operating range, therefore the guage is indicating NORMAL temperature range.

For example, my 89 reads between "MA" with a new 180 thermostat and a new sender. Your actual indication will vary.

Back in Michigan ... again.
My 95 with a new t-stat & sender would read around the MA as well, but my 89 with whatever t-stat & sender are in there (haven't changed them since I bought it) will actually run around RM, and in stop/go traffic or intersections will climb up to the O. Greg's 92 SHO reads pretty much the same as mine, and he has a newer t-stat & sender.
