My 1993 ATX stalled @ a light, then as I approached the next light it did it again. I started it back up w/ NO problem, then I pulled into my school parking lot and it stalled as I was parking?!

then, as I opened my door the handle snapped and now it's loose, but still operates...

whats up w/ the stalling? what can this be caused by? I have NEVER exprienced anything like this w/ my SHO. by the way it has 166,574 miles, if that means anything.

please help, i wanna get this fixed, cuz this really scared me. And after I told my mom (who already wants me to get a new car) she wanted to sell it...haha

please tell me this is an easy fix so I can keep my SHO, if not tell me that too...haha

It was wierd because the car was running great until I was @ the light, and then I could feel it running kinda rough, and then...KUPUHT...the RPM's went from 900 to 0...lol...? I turned it on, drove to next light, then same thing...then as I was parking it stalled again?!

if this means anything, several light came on when this happend none of which was the check engine light. Do I just need a tune-up? or major engine work?

thanx guys...

You didn't provide much information. It could be one of several things. The first that come to mind are the fuel pump, integrated control relay module and the crankshaft position sensor. We would need more information to be able to tell which it could be.

You should check the codes. There is bound to be a telltale code to help diagnose this problem. Listen for the fuel pump. How does it sound? Does it run for about 1.5 seconds after the engine quits or is it already off?

Hey guys, I have a question about the stalling. I'm in Ohio and It's been about 35 degrees at night and only about 55 during the day. My question is, when my SHO is cold and I go to park in a parking place with the clutch in, it inevitably wants to stall. Not all the time, I just recently noticed it. Most of the time it wants to happen when the steering is up against one of the stops. It doesn't miss and I have all my power, and no codes. Any ideas, or just normal?

BTW, its a 93 MTX, just so you kno. The PCM is brand new, as well as fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, and wires replaced 1 year ago. I also don't notice the hesitation that most other owners speak of when it's first started. Don't know if that makes any difference, just trying to give the whole story. Thanks in advance.

The engine should stay above around 12-1400 RPM while in motion. Once you come to a complete stop it should drop back to the normal idle speed of around 750-800 RPM.

If it doesn't:

1) Inspect for vacuum leaks. Any leak will upset the operation of the IAB/ISC valve. Inspect the cruis control linkage. It can separate or otherwise cause the throttle linkage to screw up.

2) If there are no leaks present, reset the idle program. Scott has posted it numerous time.

3) If that still doesn't help, clean or replace the IAB/ISC valve. About 55 bucks at AutoZone. Redo the idle programming before driving.

Avoid holding the steering against the stop. To do so will greatly shorten the life of the system. This also places a much greater drag on the engine that would contribute to stalling, especially if the idle speed is low.

93MTXSHO, it sounds like you should first reset your idle program before doing anything else. Go here for the reset procedure.

Thanks guys... Its not that big of a deal. It was just kind of annoying. I'll reset the idle program and see what happens. The next step is to clean the IAB, what a load of fun. Anyway, one thing I wanted to clarify is that it only ever does it when cold, never ever when it's warm. Sometimes it will stumble and almost stall, but never shut off. Other times, it will just die. Thanks again guys.
