U can check the PCV valve/oil separator fairly easily. They are located on the bank 1 valve cover, near the firewall on the pass side of the engine. Cleaning them is not really effective, and the part design has been updated since it was originally installed on your SHO.

Thanks guys! The pcv looks alright as far as I can tell. But I was doing some exploring and pulled one of the hoses off the bov and noticed there was quite a bit of oil in there. Not enough to drip out, but enough to get your finger wet. Think a catch can would help this?

It would, but the issue might be a faulty seal. IIRC, there is an orange colored seal/diaphragm that can break and cause issues, mainly loss of boost.

Have you checked the intercooler to see if it is clean or has buildup? Might be getting sucked into the throttle body. here is a howto:

Checked the throttle body pipe and cac today. Dipstick pic is how much was in there. I lifted the drivers side up so it would pool better. I used a hand pump and didn't get much. Tempted to use my electric pump but I don't want to catch my car on fire if there's fuel in there.

Tubing pic is yellow with residue, all gunked up. Kinda worrying. My finger pic is what I wiped out of tube.

I also found some oily dust on bottom of noise maker that was caked on there.

Def got enough buildup, but now that you have cleaned out the cac, you can monitor the actual rate under YOUR driving conditions. The crapola was definitely getting pulled into the CAC-throttle body pipe. The dust on the NM doesn't look too bad, I would, again, clean and monitor rate of buildup; also consider eliminating the NM altogether, either with a cap or a part from a police interceptor, MKS, etc. Expensive parts but cleaner look and also elimination of a possible boost leak source.

Looks like BOV replacement time.

Did you check the throttle body itself? Does it look clean front/back? Also check the TPS connections, make sure they are free of dirt/corrosion, add some dielectric grease to keep them that way.

The exposed side of the throttle body didn't have an accumulation like the pipe, but I didn't inspect the other side. What is the function of the noise maker other than make noise and what noise does it make?

What indicates that I need new BOVs? I'm not sure how to tell when they go bad.

Also, will cleaning out the cac help with the knock at all
