Well, I just got my frendly Maryland Emissions test letter today. The car has to be in by Sept. 14. Do SHOs have any problems with these tests? Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can be sure of passing. Thanks for any input.

Year? Tranny? (You should put this info in your signature).

Most SHO emission woes have to do with high NOx. This pollutant is caused by high combustion chamber temperatures. Cylinder temps are dependant on a variety of things, including (but not limited to) fuel and ignition timing, a/f mixture, intake air temp, and engine cooling system effectiveness. If yours is an ATX or California MTX then it has an EGR system, which exists solely to control NOx:

Ford DPFE/EGR System Summary

In general, a lean-running engine is much more succeptible to high NOx levels because it runs hotter. Hence, air/vacuum leaks, dirty MAF, clogged fuel filter/injectors, low fuel pressure, carbon deposits, and any other factors that would cause a lean condition will likely cause higher NOx.

In short, if you want to avoid NOx issues, make sure your engine is well tuned, both fuel and ignition-wise, that the cooling system is performing at full capacity, and that the EGR system (if equipped) is functioning properly.

1. So If I pull the air filter off and take it in the morning cold would this help?
2. I also read on another thread to pull the SPOUT plug? what ever that is, if this would help could someone please post a pic of what I need to pull? I don't believe mine has the egr it was sold in Utah not Cali. oh yeah if its not in my sig 94 mtx

Update on emissions test

I went through emissions and failed miserably, but that is old news. Since then I have had a lot of work done to my car. You see, I was one of the new to SHO people who knew nothing about the car I bought, other than what the seller told me. His ad read " 1995 Ford SHO Appox 80K, This car runs strong, New Cam Sensor, Crank Sensor, New Water Pump, New ECM, New Timing Belt, 60K Check Complete. Ect, Ect. The car looked great, Started right up and I bought it- hook, line and sinker! :frown:

To make a long story short, the car looked great but thats about it. Here is a list of what I have had done to the car:

1. Complete top 60K service to include new motorcraft wires, spark plugs and
ignition coil. New seals and gaskets. Ect, ect.
2. Check bottom 60K
3. Install SS Y-Pipe w/Cats
4. Replace O2 sensors
5. install Dynomax exhaust system/replace all exhaust hardware, hangers, ect
6. removed and cleaned intake. New seals and gaskets.
7. replaced secondary controller vacumm valve.
8. Changed the motor oil to Castrol Syntec and replaced filter
9. replaced oil level sensor

10. Checked and repaired all ground wires.
11. replaced fuel filter and gass cap
12. removed and replaced rear brake calipers and installed new pads.
13. installed bottom transmission drain plug (MTX) and changed fluid to
syncromesh
14. replaced EEC (computer)

This was all done to a car that was supposed to be in great shape and it still needs some things done. I guess I qualify for a waver at the emissions place now.

For those wondering All I did for my Emissions was to replace the fuel filter (it had more than 10k on it anyway) and pull the Spout plug. It ran like junk no pull what so ever. It passed easy.

NO dropped from 1095 to 320 with 948 being Max
HC dropped also from 75 to 53 With 112 being Max

First test was done with a warm car in late afternoon, Second was done with a cold car first thing in the Morning those three thing were the onlt changes I made. Not too bad thanks guys :salute:

Check your EGR system. Plugged EGR passages are one of the most frequent reasons for high NOX levels in EGR equipped cars.

i just did emissions and almost cried. HC is at 114 and max is 114 @ 15mph and NOX is at 770 @ 25mph while max is 724. I'm pretty sure it's EGR since it throw the EGR code. Also the f&*%&(*%&#(* check engine light came on during the test but the stupid light didn't go on while I was driving to or from the stupid smog place. I think I'm just going to disconnect the light for now ;p Anyways, I'm going to go outside right now to clear the EGR. Hopefully this will solve the problem for now.

You can't just unplug it because they have to verify that it works. It would probably benefit you to just remove the intake completely disassemble it and clean it out entirely and you will have a great chance to remove the access plugs and completely clean out the EGR passages....

If I remember correctly, when these cars were new, the engines ran so clean, at like 0 emissions. I just got back from the NYS Inspection test, the car is put on a dyno, run up to 55 mph, up and down. Car passed with ease, extremely low limits. I would have thought it was the same for the rest of them also.

mine always passed without a problem. but i've had EGR problems since a couple months after last smog and been too lazy to fix it. didn't think it would affect it that damn bad. also when there's a problem with my car it takes a while to get fixed :( the joys of being in college and working 15 hours a week ;p i can't wait till i can actually have enough money to do things in a timely fashion with my car and not go into debt :D

FWIW, most MTX cars fail up here in Ontario due to an error in the data for the MTX 3.0L. My MORE than healthy 91 failed as well on numerous occassions, forcing me to pull the SPOUT connector.

ATX tend not to fail as often, due to its EGR system....
