Last night i went to work on my friends and all i can say is oh_my . The car is dead and he put a new battery, starter, and battery terminal. I went to jump his car and when i attached the jumper cables the car lurched forward oh_my . The keys were in the ignition but the car wasn't turned on. The starter was turning it self over on it's own. Also the jumper cables were melting/smoking(the plastic). This problem is electrical i am going to take all the neons, and his aftermarket system out. Any other advice?? i am just glad this isn't my car :D .

An 89 SHO. He had a shop install his new starter so I'm going to look at that and make sure every thing is good. After that i'm going to have him replace the battery cables.

if it has one replace starter switch [syninode[spelling?]] on inner fender
"solenoid" wink dont worry, i wont tell :D

i had a wierd starter problem over the summer, when i turned the key a ton of wires spontaneously melted under my hood. but the starter wouldnt turn. turns out it had somehow developed an internal short (im still baffled as to how). this doesnt seem to be your friends problem seeing as the starter turns and all, but definately replace the solenoid and the battery cables, if nothing else works, test the ignition tumbler in the steering column. and for what its worth i wouldnt worry about taking his neons and system out, theyre not the cause of this problem i can assure you. but if it gives you peace of mind then just clip the power leads and cap 'em for now. you can always crimp them back together later, but i wouldnt waste the time taking them out.

He has a shorted or miswired starter solenoid. About $7 for a Wells F492 at AutoZone.

It is responsible for switching the battery power to the starter motor.

Disconnect the small wire from the solenoid and try jumping the car again, if the starter motor engages (make damn sure the car is out of gear this time), replace the solenoid due to an internal short.
