My 92 MTX speedo needle has been erratic and inaccurate lately, although odometer seems to be operating properly. As there is only an electrical cable from the trans-mounted VSS, I assume that somewhere in the production run, they switched from cable-drive to electronic signal. Do we know when ( at what number)? Can I bench-test the VSS when out of the trans ? I've been quoted prices from $29 to $129. for aftermarket replacements. I haven't tried Ford yet. Any recommendations welcome !!

Thanks to all !

Yes,your basically stuck with the cable speedo.
Your options include going over the cable and making sure it is seated correctly and or replacing.
Or you could put together a custom cluster to include a GPS based speedo.

People have done the digital swap. Might do a search on that. I think Mitchell(jelloslug) did a write up on it.
