Is there any way to block off the EGR without having a check engine light come on? How would one go about blocking off the EGR?

Thanks in advance

You will have a CE light unless you replace the computer with a non-EGR model. You will have to seal off the holes in the intake and exhaust manifolds to prevent leaks. One should be careful when monkeying around with the aluminum intake structure. I bet it wouldn't take much to crack or otherwise damage it if you don't know what exactly you're doing. You may need the EGR if you have to pass emissions testing in your area.

No. You will get a CHECK ENGINE light and a 332 code. The EGR allows the engine to pass the more strict NOx emissions requirements. It doesn't reduce your power output, so what advantage do you expect to gain by disabling the system?

Well i don't need to pass testing in MN... so why not disable it... (I get bored easily...)

Actually my EGR in my camaro and I never got along well.... I guess I'm thinking the one on my SHO will one day drive me crazy... but oh well....

Now I see its more of a challenge then I expected, so I guess I'll keep it the way it is. :D

not hard at all to disable. You can either totally remove it, and use block off plates or, like a guy i know did, put a thin piece of metal (he used brass) in between the egr valve and manifold and exhaust manifold, then reassemble so it looks like its hooked up.

If you want to easily disable it pull and plug the vacuum line going to it.

On my V8 it lowered the intake temp 40F in 90F weather at highway speeds.

EGR gasses aren't combustible and take up a percentage of the combustion chamber fill. Could it possibly improve performance somewhat by not allowing the EGR to recirculate? I tried to plug it but the EEC got wise to what I did. finger

Or you can just pull the electrical connector to the vacuum motor. IMHO, no gain or loss with disabling the EGR on my car. I don't think it's worth the time to mess with. Disable, maybe lower temperature of your intake manifold. Enable, lowers combustion chamber temperatures. Pick your evils, lol! The reason EGR isn't used on 49 state cars isn't for performance reasons, it's cost. The factory doesn't want to spend money on crap like EGR unless it's forced to. I'm just going to leave mine enabled. Maybe if I switch to a 49 state computer at some point I'll disable it again to do a more in depth comparison.

A good chip programmer can eliminate the EGR codes as well as other codes and programming.

I also had my Secondary Air Injection eliminated on the '97.
