So i am wondering what the problem is. The e brake doesnt hold for much of anything and i would like to know how much it might be to fix that. New job involving stopping and leaving the car. This could mean multiple start ups and shut offs in a pretty short period. Dont know if thats good.

e-brake

Frozen cables? streched cables? try adjusting the e-brake cables first. If they are frozen replace all three its like 60 or 70 bucks for the three parts at advanced auto.

Your post mentions a 96 brake upgrade.

Did the emergency brake work before the upgrade? If it did, then something was not installed or adjusted properly during the upgrade. If not, then check the cables as mentioned by shomon.

Im not sure how well it worked before hand. I bought it after the mods listed had been done. but ill check the cables....i know on my old SHO the e-brake didnt work for at all and i was told the cables where stretched like crazy. Those cables by any chance run along the drivers side?

the one on the drivers side is the front cable then the adj. and bracket that connect the two rear cables. The front one stretches and the rear ones freeze.
The 96 brake upgrade is in the front and does not have anything to do with the e-brake system. I am going to do my cables soon for MA. state inspection in OCT.

On my 95, I put off replacing my cables, it was more than just the cables. At one time, likely before I bought the car, the E-brake was applied and the arms on the calipers were bound up via rust to the extent that the springs would not return the arms alone to the "off" position, so pulling the cables back too was impossible. I would reccomend that you check to see if the e-brake arms/levers move, and if so, that they will return all the way back FREELY, then figure out what to do about the cables.

EDIT: I replaced my whole rear brake system to get the rears to work properly. Calipers, Brackets, Pads, Hoses, and even installed Bias Plugs.
I got my replacement cables from the local bone-yard, and had 10-20 rear-disk SLO's to choose from to get a well functioning set. I lubed them up, straightened out the threads on the adjuster, and threw them on. Works great. It is almost refreshing to be able to leave it running if needed.
