so i brought my car to a mechanic because i couldn't get the exhaust nuts off to take the y pipe out and it seems the consensus was that it was a b**** to install.

he ended up dropping the subframe and getting the vss out that way. does it seem like thats alot harder to do than just dropping the y pipe to do it and working blind? took him about 16 hours or so to do it.

thats at least 1000 dollars in labor... while i dont have an atx and i know it is harder to replace. i thought it could be done w/ the y pipe off. i know it would still be hard. but wouldnt take half that time. did you really pay for 16 hours of work for it? i mean if the nuts were really seized that bad. it would have been cheaper to just freaking cut the thing off and reweld it or something.

I guess he can do it any way he wants, but the shop book calls for a 3-31/2 hour job. I checked. If he isnt charging you for anything more than to each their own he may have more time than sense! The Y pipe is the way to do it.

You can do it with the y pipe on. A few of us just did it within the last few months. run a search for VSS replacement for the tips before you do it the hard way...one of the reasons this forum exists ;)

i tried to replace it myself, but strapped for time and the fact that i couldn't get the exhaust nuts off the y pipe, i gave it to him. he charged me 250 to replace it and a new speedo cable. just gotta get around to changing the o2 sensors and it'll be good.

This might be a silly question but there are a lot of terms I don't know when it comes to the SHO like VSS. What is it?
