That question can not be adequately answered without many other pieces of information. How good a mechanic are you? How many tools do you have? Are you willing to buy or rent the special tools for the valve gapping and the crankshaft damper removal? Do you have a clean garage area to perform the work?

You really need to have the timing belt replaced and at a cost of $32.81 for the Gates T248 from RockAuto.com, there is not a finacial reason that it can't be. Your valve shims are probably not in very good shape, so be prepared to replace nearly all of them.

I take about a solid 10 hours to replace the timing belt, water pump, CPS, front main oil seal and accessory belts and clean the front of the engine. I usually take about 10+ hours to regap/check all 24 valve shims, replace the plugs, plug wires, valve cover gaskets and spark plug well seals and clean the IAC valve, intake, valve covers and intake ports.

I have emailed you the spreadsheet I use for the parts and the lowest priced sources. That will give you an idea of the prices of the parts. If you do the work yourself, that will leave the tools purchases and rentals to add to your cost tally.

Sho-Kid,

Just like what SDPatt said, if you are a decent mechanic for DIY...then you can definitely tackle the job.

I first prepared myself by purchasing a shop manual from Ford and another one from Chilton's. After that, I bombarded everybody with questions regarding my maintenance plans here in the SHO Forum...most expecially SDPatt. It helped me a lot...definitely boosted my confidence. Once I have a list of all the parts that I needed eg. timing belt, serpentine, sensors of all sorts, thermostat, water pump etc... I ordered them on-line. SCPatt's list is your bible for parts...keep it in good shape! Anyway, it took me at least almost 2 months to gather all the parts in my possession...then I started last weekend.
As we speak, my SHO is currently on jack stands. So far, I had replaced the water pump, CPS sensor and front main seal...Slowly but surely, I am making progress with my work. If SDPATT takes about 10 hours...it might take me twice that time...better be absolutely sure than be sorry. Good Luck, give it some careful thought and tackle the job with confidence. Best of all, enjoy the moments.

(I have the instructional video, if you want to borrow)...
