OK, so here's what's up. I purchased Pennzoil Ultra Platinum with Pureplus Technology (sounds fancy, right?) for my next oil change. However, I got sick this week (currently coughing up half a lung) and I wasn't willing to wait another week at 5700 miles already, so I brought my own oil and filter to the dealership where they did the change for me for $14 and change... plus a multipoint inspection... plus a wash. OK, that was worth it...

...at least until I got home, and took the second 5 QT jug of 5w-30 out of my trunk to put it on the shelf... when I noticed I only had 3 QTs left in the jug. With 2 QTs gone, and an another entire 5 QT jug gone... uh-oh, that's a 7 QT fill for a motor that calls for 6. Unless of course if he spilled some and had to use more than anticipated, which would be no big deal, so long as I know. So I checked after it sat for 10 min or so... definitely high ...way high. I then called the dealership and asked about it, and after a few minute wait, I was told the tech thought it was a 4 QT jug. He must be a big milk drinker. Nice. lol.

OK, not the end of the world, I'd already purchased one of those nifty oil suction pumps that look like an old school indian pump, just in case (get ready for irony) I made a mistake in an oil change, so I took oil out until the dipstick showed just under the second dot. Spot on. 1QT removed. So, resolved, but still. At least I got a wash and multipoint inspection out of it.

Anyhow, I was noticing as I sucked the excess oil out of the dipstick hole that the oil was much, much darker than I was expecting. The new Pennzoils, at least as they come out of the bottle, are such a light amber color that they're almost clear. What came out of my motor wasn't black, but very dark amber... brown really. Barely translucent in the suction tube, but reasonably translucent on the stick. How could it be this dirty already?? That makes no sense to me after driving, quite literally, 1 mile. But hey, maybe it's a heat thing, but I doubt it somehow. The last change I did, putting Mobil 1 in, when I checked the oil a day or two later (after many more miles than only ONE) it was still that light honey gold color that was very hard to read on the dipstick. Not so with this change, it's quite dark by comparison. The whole thing just seems off to me, all things considered.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Maybe they forgot to put the new filter on that I gave them? Maybe they didn't empty it all the way?? Maybe both? Maybe it's normal for the new Pennzoils??? I can't say for sure, so let me know what you think could be the cause for my mysteriously dirty appearing oil. I'm also wondering if I shouldn't change it again right away, just to make sure everything was done right. What a PITA.

Different oils have different detergent properties. It's possible the PUP+ loosed dirt & grime within the engine rather rapidly, causing color darkening of the oil. Maybe someone left an air intake line open and there's some dirt coming in that way. A UOA can help determine that.

Oh, good one, I hadn't thought of that... maybe it's the new oil just doing it's job. They do claim it's got more "cleaning ability" than Mobil 1 (not that I simply buy into marketing hype full tilt, lol)... so could be? But you think that much after only ONE mile?? Not sure if 5000 is wise with the oil looking so, um... used? Change out soon you think?

BTW... just checked the air intake box and tubing, everything's clamped up good. (Unless I misunderstood what you meant, which, in my noobishness is very possible lol.)

I'm surprised you didn't comment on my dealership experience today lol. Honestly, I wasn't nearly as annoyed as I probably should have been, but I like those guys so... well, it is what it is I guess.

I too think one mile is not enough to make that difference. Maybe do/have the oil change done all over again someplace else? Maybe they simply did not do the oil filter change and all the old stuff is now in circulation? If there are no leaks from the oil filter, it's probably tightened properly at least.

Didn't comment on the dealership :omg: experience because I keep hearing such stories on other forums as well :smash:. Might just be a noob tech or might be a sloppy svc dept, who's to say? You can always ask for an experienced person to work on your car to help reduce the risk  Lucky not to lose the fasteners while they drop the belly pan! Not like they're gonna video the whole thing for you. So, always an ass-pucker moment when you get the car back from the shop ...

the Motorcraft oil is the best for these EcoBoost engines. Very few other oils actually meet the Ford spec for oil, and I always recommend Motorcraft oil for any of the Ford / Lincoln turbo engines.

Something unholy happened at your oil change place, whether intentional or accidental.

My 200,000 mile motor takes months for the oil to get dark enough to read the "stick" easily.

If this was a dealership with a row of Fords being serviced, it is easy to lose track of where things go.

My bet is your new oil and filter went into the Ford vehicle positioned beside you, and when the final check was done on your car, the technician dumped the 2 quarts from your second container to "top it up", being unaware it was not new oil in there.

No one is going to fess-up, I would change it again, and if you buy your own stuff, you should do it youself.

I quit having my oil done at "places unknown, with parts unknown" when my oil plug was stripped and I had to come up with a fix myself. That was way harder than just doing it myself in the first place.

The problem is that this is a dealership that I've gone to for many, many years. 99% of the time, I get (what I think is) great service, and never felt ripped off on a sale. The tech in question is actually experienced... so I was kind of in shock over the whole affair.

Since we bought our new house and I have somewhere to work on it, I've been doing my own oil changes on our cars. I only didn't this time because I was sick and didn't want to wait til 6,000 mile mark. :( That'll learn me.

I don't think it's the oil at all. I've heard good things about the PUP too, and it definitely exceeds Ford requirements. (I was sure to do my homework on that one - they've certified it to exceed the latest in all manufacturer standards, including Ford.) Assuming you do it yourself, BlueSHO, please repost here once you've got it in and drive it a couple miles. If it dirties up real fast with a new filter, then we can chalk it up to detergents getting out gunk other oil didn't. Otherwise, I'll know yet even more about my local dealership that I didn't want to know. (I've been their customer since my first car.)

Given that the tech made the mistake of having 7 qts in my car, it doesn't seem too far off for him to have forgotten to change the filter, or worse, as put by sperold. All things being equal, I think I'll change it again this weekend, myself (aka correctly, to be sure), and see if it doesn't stay clear this time. I bet it will.

...still wishing I had one of those 2 post lifts they have :( lol... oh to dream.
