doug lewis swears up and down that the machining and drilling is stronger then regualar diff welding. what does everyone think?

I would go with the $500 maching & drilling. FWIW, Doug Lewis is a great guy. I've known him for at least about 15 years. He has modified and blown up about every part on Gen 1-3 SHOs. I would trust him for what works.

Plus, IMO that's a damn good price for a tranny R&R and the job. As others have said, the LSD options are a LOT more expensive, and IMO for your use, they are overkill.

i dont know. i will ask toi even see if it is neccsary. but i do make more then 120 a week usually its between 170 to 300 a week. depends on the amount of jobes is get. also.. i spend my money very wisly. id say if i made 200 in a week 150 goes away for savings for the sho. this week has been awesome though around 500$ but i still need more hahahah

That is not a wise way to allocate your earnings Zach. ;)

From everything ive heard doug really knows his stuff. If the machining makes it that much better I would spend the extra $100. I had mine welded and it lasted me 3 years of alot of abuse......autox + novice driver = alot of inside wheelspin. If you have the funds doug will do a first rate job. If you are wanting to save a little $ get the mtx rebuild video from shonut and take things apart yourself. I pulled some pics from the forum and took my diff to a local machine shop and they welded it for me. Just my 2 cents

1. Quaife or Wave Trac
2. Change the roll pins and weld
3. Lubrication modifications

I had done 1 burnout in my car, literally 4 seconds, not long enough to make the tires smoke. hard 1-2 shifts blew my diff with fresh pins in 20k. Its welded now, not gonna take that chance again. Your call, for 500 idk, but my trans already had to come out and be redone so it was a no brainer.

I've stated this many times, but on my original new '89, I probably did over 100 burnouts, some so hard they spun both tires. Changed the fluid on a regular basis. Sold it at 182K after 10 years. New owner had the pins fail at 200K a coupla years later,l just driving in traffic. Up through about 1999-2000, I had never heard of anyone blowing pins.

OTOH, I bought a questionable-history 80K '95 MTX in '01. Pins blew after 5 dragstrip runs. Aftermarket warranty had the entire tranny rebuilt (to the tune of $2,000). Drove it nice through the winter. Went to the strip. After about 5-6 runs, the pins blew driving slowly through the pits.

After discussions with a few folks, there is a certain amount of wear that occurs to the carrier and maybe other parts that aren't replaced in a rebuild that leave the pins susceptible to failure.

The basic tranny when new was pretty stout IMO. But, we are now dealing with worn-out stuff.

I blew my diff while passing a car on the hwy.

5th gear, 75mph and then I heard a sound I NEVER want to hear again. Blew a nice hole in the side of the case and spewed trans fluid for about 1/4 mile.

One of the saddest days I've ever had with the SHO......

I always say "Don't be an ass, ease off the gas". If I break one tire loose on pavement, you can usually ease out of the throttle enough to correct yourself or just don't get into it that hard to avoid it in general. You're at such a traction disadvantage once you start peg leggin' it that lifting up 3/32" off your pedal will get you moving again.

12 years, 3 SHOs, 0 blown diffs. Make sure your rod bearings are good and learn how to keep peg leggin' take-offs to a bare minimum. Tight front end parts and a good alignment are a great start. Save up for a Wavetrack/Quaife so you can turn-in faster and launch with an even power spread. Be patient!

80 in fifth?? That's right in the meat of the power curve in 3rd.

3rd is the Money Gear from 60 out to 105.
