Decent Replacement Subs For Stock setup

Ok, I did some light searching, but I ended up with a lot of people saying to get new amps etc etc. I want to keep the vehicle as stock as possible, and don't need anything tooth shattering.

Question is, what is a decent replacement sub to the stock sub. Mine finally ended up blowing... finally lol... i see that the stock sub is 6ohm. I didn't particularily see any 6ohm 6.5" subs.

1) Should I go 8ohm or 4ohm on the sub?

2) For those of you who replaced their subs and kept factory everything else, what did u use? (and how does it sound, and did you have to do anything like add insulation or port a hole in the enclosure) OH! and part numbers on the sub would help too!

JBL makes a sub that fits in the stock box and sounds a little better than stock. I found it on the forum and paid about 100 bucks for it.

The advice you are getting is right though the stock amp setup is weak.

while i understand wanting to remian stealthy, there are far better sounding ways to do it. if you insist on keeping that craptastic factory enclosure, allow me to at least suggest a Tang Band sub (check em out) in a heavily baffled and sealed stock box to reduce internal airspace to what the sub requires and feeding it happy power from a small aftermarket amp. please? for me?

I'm going with 2 of these under the rear deck, paired with a 100-150watt mono amp.


If you MUST stay with the factory sub, go with an 8ohm speaker. 4ohms would be trying to pull more current from the amp and thus make it overheat all the time.

Be warned tho, the 8ohm speaker will not be as loud at the stock 6ohm.

I'm running a Polk 8" in a box, and it works fine. I recently replaced the stock speakers with Infinity references, and along with the Kenwood head unit, it pumps pretty darn good. Even impressed the installers asking if the amp was stock .

I'm in your boat. I put a 6.5" JL Audio subwoofer in that "craptastic" factory box and re-mounted it back where it went; however, I'm still running a totally stock setup (factory head unit with cassette and CD and factory JBL speakers).

Here's the deal. Even though the sub "works", you cannot even tell it's there. I think this is because of the 4ohm/8ohm issue. To really get the sub to put out it's full potential, I'd need an aftermarket head unit and a more powerful amp. I can crank up this factory system all day long and see the sub hitting hard but you can't hear or "feel" it hitting.

I have yet to do anything else with it.

I paid $0.99 for the sub and 15.95 for shipping. It fit well in the "craptastic" factory box and sounds decent. I can feel the punch in my seat and it also has a good bass carry. I have a Sony head, Clarion fronts and Sony rears with the factory amps and sub box. The thing I really like is that I can crank it up while sitting in the car and hear and feel the highs, mids and lows. Get out of the car and close it up and you can barely hear it. Best of all, nothing rattles, like the license plate, trunk lid or bumper. Put your hand on the rear window or trunk lid and you can feel the vibration, though.

I put in a 8'' i had from a bazooka bass tube thats a 4 ohm if i remember correctly. Everything else is stock. Using the radio it doesnt really hit too hard. However playing cds or something is when it becomes more noticable. I hope to at least upgrade the deck soon. But all that was required to make the 8 work was enlarging the hole in the sub box. But there are always more improvements to be made.

I wouldn’t really consider 6.5 A sub woofer Anymore it’s more of a mid Woofer. You’re not going to have a frequency range in a 6.5 as you would get an 8,10 or 12

Agreed but people wanted to use the factory sub enclosure to replace failing oem speakers. Also saves space. I probably have 2 or 3 in the shed from different cars and various replacement speakers in them. Nice to have the sub tucked away and off the floor of the trunk.

JBL makes a component speaker that might work (GTO 600c) its a 6.5 inch speaker that ranges from 40hz-23k hz leave the tweeter out and you might have a good setup. Its a bit pricey though..
