Hello again! Looking for some tire recommendations. In my quest i have finally burned up the last of the Tigerpaws she came to me with.
So, I've got a stock '94 MTX, and I'm looking to keep her stock. From what I gather from the brochures, an MTX should have included "performance" tires rather than the usuall crap. But aside from that I can't find any info on what they actually had. Only lead I've got is seeing a barn-find '89 that apparently came with Goodyear GT+4, which don't seem to be made anymore. But I can't verify if that was true for all years of SHO.

And of course, what would replace them if they are discontinued.

So from a size/spec standpoint 215-60R-16 was the stock size, and they were also V speed rated (149 mph). Many people go with 225-55R-16s; there are more choices in that size and the revs/mile are very similar. Once you establish that, then you have to decide on "all-season", "summer", or "performance" tires. That speaks to the traction & treadwear numbers. Traction is rated in letters (AA, A, B) and treadwear ranges from numbers in the hundreds. The lower the number the better the traction, at the cost of quicker treadwear. Typically a 300 tire lasts 30,000 miles, a 600 tire offers less traction but wears out at a higher mileage (50,000 miles).

Are you driving this on a regular or just occasionally? If this is not a collector vehicle I would get a solid performing tire like conti or michelin. If you like improved performance, make sure you have good tires

It's not my daily, but I do enjoy the occasional cross country road trip to the SHO convention as well as the odd Brony convention here and there. No winter time tho

I would just get the best performing tire that is reasonable to your budget and will not easily hydroplane (ie summer vs all season tread). If you are really jonesing for original mfg of tire, ok. I own a '14 f150 and I think the original Michelin tire model is no longer in production. I still use Michelins but I have to get a newer model. I also used Michelin and Continental on my SHO's. Not a huge Goodyear fan of the tires available for the SHO when I was shopping around.

Zak had to get some from overseas.

I was running 225/50-16 BFG G-Force Comp2 before I switched to 17" rims. But for me, that size corrected my speedometer.

FWIW for everybody who might end up in the situation of low mileage/collector status, it is not recommended that you drive on tires that are over ten years old. ESPECIALLY special spares. And also especially working them hard! I've seen an old special spare blow out just from age, sitting in the spare well. The tire models that were out when the original Gen1/2 came out are long, long gone. You wouldn't want to use them for anything other than rolling onto the concours lawn.

Modern tire tech keeps advancing. It had better, because your average new SUV has equal or better 0-60 /and/ cornering than the original Gen 1/2! (on the then current tires.) Modern top end 200 treadwear extreme or max category tires have as much grip as race tires did 40 years ago.
You can still get some ultra high performance all seasons in 225/55-16 and they're much better than even performance OEM was back then. Tire Rack carries that size in Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus, General G-MAX AS-07, BFGoodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S PLUS.

The only 215/60-16 that is V rated for top speed at Tire Rack in the high or ultra-high performance group is the Sumitomo HTR A/S P03. A lot easier to source than those tires that Zak noted last year, might not be quite as zippy in max g's.

Thanks for the input! Of course I'm not going to look for any new old stock tires. Brand new and properly roadworthy for me. I just wanted something that was going to get me the closest to stock comfort/feel/performance - even if it's actually an upgrade. Anything has to be better than Tigerpaws. Visual aspect is second priority. I don't really care about snow performance or treadlife for this car.
What do you guys think about modern Goodyear Eagle varieties?

Okay, looks like the old GT+4 are an all weather/high performance tire. Cool. So, it looks like there are no more Eagles made in our size at all. But honestly, I'me haveing a hard time finding anything to fit the bill. Totally forgot these came with "ZR" rated tires, so much higher speed than the typical "V" rating. Not sure why, if the car tops out at 143mph. But in my quest of at least making the car "correct", I am now hunting something that is really hard to hunt. Most sites i'm on don't even offer a filter option for anything abouve V. And the Google doesn't bring up much.

Yes, I know I don't need a tire that high, but for the sake of matching the brochure and the door sticker, I want a tire that fast.

Yeah. Like other car parts, demand drives what is available. 16's are really narrow now and high performance even more so.

That's why I went to 17s on mine. I wanted proper performance and 16" slicers just don't have the best tires available.

I have the Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus in 225/55-16 size. So far the tires have been great. Not as sticky as an Extreme Performance summer only tire, but does well.
