Cylinder design question.

Why did Yamaha engineer the top of the cylinder like they did. Why not a flat top? What does the design do for power/emmisions? Crazy question, but ive been wondering....

The top of the cylinder that you are refereing to is the piston. It has those dents in it for the valves, they are called valve reliefs.
