If it condition happens again, watch the tachometer. If the tach drops immediately to zero, it means the feed signal has been lost and the crankshaft position sensor (CPS) is most likely failing. It requires the accessory belt and pulleys to be removed, along with the crankshaft damper and timing belt covers and, with the 3.2L, possibly the water pump to help route the wiring.
