Hi everyone,

Just replacing the water pump on my 91 SHO 3.0 DOHC. I'm enjoying pulling half the motor apart to get to it!!

I can't get the crank pully off so I can remove all the timing covers and belt.

My impact wrench won't budge it and I can't hold the motor still to use a big bar and socket.

I'm figuring the bolt comes off clockwise due to the pully moving in a counter direction when running? (I've tried both ways)

Any HOT TIPS on the correct direction and how to budge that sucker would be greatly appreciated

Take a 1/2 drive rachet and a socket, set it on the bolt and rest the rachet on the subframe. Now for the easy part, hook up the battery and tap the starter for like a second until you hear the bolt come loose. Trust me, you'll know it. That's about it!

I have posted a picture showing how the wrench is positioned. Search on crankshaft and starter.

Use 4th or 5th and apply the brakes to hold the engine, low gears have mechanical advantage and easily overcome the brakes. It's a normal bolt, no reverse threads. I use a 3/4" drive socket set, they don't flex and are more than a match for that bolt. I have always been able to remove the bolt without using the " crank it" method, but many have used that method successfully. Good luck.

Starter method. It is so easy and takes about 2 seconds.

Anyhow, I gave up and went to plan B, (the BREAKER BAR method!)......there's only one catch, I bent both my breaker bars in the process! and the freaking bolt still won't budge. I tried a good 7 times to crank it off with no luck.

And my friends new Snap On impact wrench he had full faith in was no match for the job!

Any other ideas would really help as this job is really dragging on.

Thanks, Adrian

I'm puzzled why, after so many mentioned the starter method, some folks are reluctant to try it. I did for the first time; after pulling the shield from the wheel well, it took as long as it takes to put a 1/2" dr. Craftsman breaker bar, with socket onto the bolt. A quick flip of the starter switch, and it was off to bigger and better things.
Try it.

Yeah, I did try the starter method by putting my breaker bars on the bolt whilst rested on the subframe and cranking the starter.....10 times.

I'm puzzled as to why even that won't work?

I'll crank my starter and by bar will be bent 30 degrees! I'll then flip it over and crank it again to straighten it out!!

It's crazy.

Your breaker bar is broken.

Here is a photo of the wrench location for a simple bolt removal using the starter method. You should also disconnect the coil pack power supply or the DIS module connections to ensure the engine will not start.

Another method with a manual transmission SHO is to put the shifter in 4th or 5th gear, set the parking brake, mount the wheel, lower the wheel to the ground and torque against the bolt with a long handled wrench. This method also works very well to apply the required 113-126 lb-ft of torque to reinstall the bolt.

They are telling you true. Using the starter works and is the easy way to remove the pulley. Try it, you will see.

I think I see your problem, in your origonal post you said that the bolt is suppose to come off in the clock wise direction and that is not true. The bolt is comming off in the counter clockweise direction. The cranks pulley is turning in the clockwise direction. I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Finally got that freaking bolt off.

I was undoing it counter clockwise thanks to sdpat's posts & pics a little while back and a few other guys saying it was a normal thread.

I ended up going to the local plumbing store and asked for a big hunk of steel pipe!

After making a 4 foot long breaker bar, putting it 4th gear and someone stomping on the brakes and giving it all I had it finally came loose.

11 years and 157K miles of ceased up bolt!

I thought I was going to break the crank!

Thanks
