how do i get the crank pulley off? i need the lower timing belt cover off and the pulley is in the way. there is only one bolt on the pulley but it is really on there. is it normal or reverse threaded? how much torque is on it? the serpentine and pulleys are off already so that will not help me hold the crank in place, i just keep spinning the crank. trying to get the engine apart in search of blown head gasket and 60k/100k if the engine is still good.

It's regular threaded. Rightey tightey, lefty loosey.

They're VERY stubborn. do a search for "starter bump". Basically you put a very strong wrench (with cheater pipe usually) and wedge it against the frame. Then you turn the key so the starter turns the pulley but the wrench stays in place, and it comes off. :thumb:

I didn't believe this the first time I took mine off, but even an air wrench wouldn't work. The starter bump took just a second!

Why do you suspect the head gasket?

can't do the starter bump, i don't think. upper is stripped down to the heads. and front is almost all gone. about the blown head gasket....well i bought the car and found out it had a "ghost" coolant leak. would get hot. overheated once and all was ok. only put in water because coolant would get spendy with the amount i had to put in.. about a gallon each use. well one day temp skyrockets and car shuts down. i let it cool, added coolant and tried to get home. not a mile later temp is way up and the car is dead again. couldn't get it to start after a 3hr break. finally got some help to push start it, once it fired up....steam from the tailpipes and had to hold the throttle to keep it going and my minor knocking got worse. i really don't know where the coolant was going because water would evaporate in the oil, so i couldn't find it there. i pray the engine isn't junk because everything on the car is good. you got any advice?

Go to the SHOPP website for instructions on the starter bump. If you can connect the batter and the starter is still on there, you should be able to do it.

Otherwise, do a search and see what people have said in the past.

If you think the HQ is gone, my advise is to get a decent SHO engine that's nearby and just swap that in, it'll probably be cheaper, easier, and have better end results.
