I drove a 95 Maxima GLE for 6 years (Family car ,the better half drove it silly) I sold it right after I got the SHO. I don't think it would have a chance, even when it was new. It was a great car though, Bose six speaker stereo, heated leather 235k and still ran good. I think it was rated at 200HP

Even a blind squirrel gets a nut.................

Be happy that you encountered a GTP with a ***** or two driving. I like the 3rd gen SHO but realistically, they are heavily out-gunned against the 97 & up GTP.

Their seems to be alot of confusion between the performance of a healthy running V6 SHO, and a healthy running V8 SHO. In my V6, I would lay waste to every generation STOCK 5 speed (& auto) Maxima's (ALL very healthy cars, and much better drivers then myself), EXCEPT for the 3.5 6 speed Maxima (02 - 03) I believe, that put several football fields on me from a roll (in my ATX). A healthy running V8 SHO will perform equally or better. As for the GTP, you'll know how YOUR sho stands against it when you do decide to race him.

FWIW, I've put 3/4's of a (front bumper at rear fender) car length on a healthy running V8 SHO (second set of coils, and plugs, and meticulous maintenance w/ 80K miles) from a dig several times in all types of condition. From a roll, he would always walk away.

A five speed maxima will shit on the gen 3. I should know i raced a few in my gen 3 and well after 2nd gear the maxima starts to walk away..... the gtp its a tad bit close but if he does have any mods you will get eaten....

You might beat a gtp but maxima 5sp i see it as you have NO CHANCE.....

My firend has 96 maxima (automatic 3.0L 190 hp) with no modifications. Would my 99 SHO (no mods) beat him?

There is also alot of confusion regarding the ability of the 3rd gen SHO vs the GTP. The general consensus on this site is that a MTX V6 SHO is what's needed if you have any hope of running down a GTP. A few in this section of the board think that a 3.4L powered SHO will provide a good race for a GTP. Personally, I think they are dreaming.

True that...our cars a fast, but not able to keep with the gtps stock. I was trying to find some videos of a gtp smoking a sho that I seen a while ago but I couldnt find em....but yah most v8 shos will get beat by gtps. I think if you go for high end speed....the sho should stand well against the gtp though.

The gtp

I dont want to try to start any thing, but when i first got my V8 sho i raced a friend in his gtp. No lie he had a jump on me but his driver door made it to my front bumper and we were dead even from there on. I did like his car because it was the two door until i got the sho. Next time the V8 hits the road I will be able to beat a stock gtp but i will have all the mods i can get. I recently bought a 93 MTX and a stock gtp would not touch it. But i do have respect for the cars because the GTP can be fast as ****.

Two able bodied drivers in both the SHO and GTP will have the Pontiac substantially ahead. How often do you see a stock, let alone modded 3rd gen SHO dip into the 14's? On the other hand, having a GTP dip into the 14's is extremely common.

Agreed. My 02 GTP will beat my V8 SHO hands-down from the line. At highway speeds, though, the SHO shines.

My 98 SHO ran a 15.4 at the local track. Temps were in the 80's.

That is average for a V8 SHO.

My 99 Automatic Maxima will beat my SHO through second gear. Third gear is all SHO.

My 00 GTP will walk my SHO. The GTP is almost stock.

My 01 GSX will walk the Maxima, SHO, and GTP.

You will blow the doors off the maxima. My V6 ATX SHO blew the doors/wheels/fenders/roof off a 98 maxipad with the 3.0 and a good driver.

The later model 3.5 maximas are fast though, so steer clear of those.

GTP will most likely get you outta the hole and walk you slowly.
