My '91 SHO MTX has recently been undergoing cooling problems. To describe the symptoms:

- when I start the car, the temperature rises at a normal rate, but when I turn on the heater, no heat comes out. This implies no coolant circulation.

- after the temp gauge reaches max, suddenly coolant starts flowing again and heat comes out of the blowers. The temp gauge drops rapidly.

- usually the same thing happens again; the temp rises and falls periodically

- finally the temp is at normal when at cruising speed for a while, but if I accelerate or let off the throttle the temp spikes again.

I replaced the thermostat, but that didn't fix the problem. Having no heat in the winter is annoying, but more importantly, I don't want a blown head gasket or warped heads.

Your help will be very appreciated. Thanks!

It sounds like you have air in the system. Did the new thermostat have a "jiggle" valve?

No it does not. I was worrying about that when I put it in. Could I just drill a pinhole in the top?

Would I need to drill a hole in the bottom as well? You know, air escapes through the top and is replace by liquid flowing through the bottom.

Nope, just the top. The system is pressurized, so the air will be forced through the hole.
