My '91 SHO MTX has recently been undergoing cooling problems. To describe the symptoms:
- when I start the car, the temperature rises at a normal rate, but when I turn on the heater, no heat comes out. This implies no coolant circulation.
- after the temp gauge reaches max, suddenly coolant starts flowing again and heat comes out of the blowers. The temp gauge drops rapidly.
- usually the same thing happens again; the temp rises and falls periodically
- finally the temp is at normal when at cruising speed for a while, but if I accelerate or let off the throttle the temp spikes again.
I replaced the thermostat, but that didn't fix the problem. Having no heat in the winter is annoying, but more importantly, I don't want a blown head gasket or warped heads.
Your help will be very appreciated. Thanks!
