We’re about to roll 40K miles. I’ve been keeping the miles down some and driving the Explorer. But I’ve heard horror stories about the cooling system/water pump on this platform. So I’m looking for a little input. The manufacturers 40K maintenance shows “Inspect cooling system and hoses”. I was thinking of going a step further and requesting a flush and refill. Overkill? Not enough? Something else suggested?

I appreciate any input from those who have gone before.

Definitely, be OCD about coolant and engine oil :) As krewat says, good time to do the PTU as well, been 3+ years since your ride went on sale. RDU at twice the interval of the PTU is ok, but this time around do them together just to set the calendar on them. Transmission fluid too.

All components breakin during service. So if the fluids are original to the vehicle, get that breakin metal and whatnot outta there, and put fresh life into your ride.

For the cost, why not do it? Make sure you check the PTU, too. And maybe even the RDU.
Thanks for the solid advice. Unfortunately non pp for the PTU. I would have to find a shop willing to get involved with drill and drain plug wouldn’t I? Could still do the RDU

No. They can drain and fill through the top vent hole.

I had my coolant tested about 5k miles ago and it was well within range and had no metal content. I still might get it flushed as I'm approaching 85k miles now.

More good advice. Thanks. I bought her new in April of ‘17. But none the less the mileage is what it is. Plus lord knows the tranny has had a little stress. Nothing abusive...but a few spirited launches!

That’s one I hadn’t heard yet. Was it the dealer or an independent shop? Even though I’m usually the poster boy for No extended warranty! I did it on this one. April of 2024 or 125K miles. But even if that’s the only thing they won’t do, I could find an independent to do it. Thanks!

I used Aamco, but since they are independent shops you never know.
