Very curious about what is needed (besides obviously a tank suited to CNG to be installed, along with the valving, etc) to switch a vehicle over to CNG.

Just curious if anyone out there has ever done this on a SHO, or any other vehicle for that matter.

Cheers :):thankyou:

I haven't heard of this, but CNG has a much higher octane than gasoline, so if the engine was properly built for it (high compression) you could get some real good power. Keep us posted on what you find out.

Helped a friend propane convert a F-250 with a built 460 many years ago. Haven't done CNG. There was a CNG Crown Vic P-I for sale at State of Oregon surplus a couple of years ago that I tried to get my dad to buy. There are only two CNG filling stations in the Portland Metro area and he happens to live right by one. Could not convince him to do it. The car was low miles and went super cheap.

The main issue is weather or not your area has the needed infrastructure of public pumps.
After that,it is pretty straight forward.
there are many places to buy conversion kits, you will also need to find the needed storage tanks.

Denver actually has over 6 filling stations in the Metro area.....I think I might look into this.

Possibly build up a super high comp. motor to take advantage of it's high octane? :)

I've never converted to CNG, but I disassembled a 4.6 Crown Vic that was run on it. FWIW the fuel rails and injectors looked the same (and stunk when I pulled them) as ordinary gasoline stuff.

with CNG you will loose about 30% of the power that you have with gasoline. because the fuel is vapor rather than a liquid and so it displaces more air. only way around the CNG power loss is direct injection. propane can be injected as a liquid and it makes MORE power than gasoline, but more often its fumigated as a vapor and so has the 30% power drop too.

there is a diehard group of CNG'er with home filling stations. my take is that its more an life-style change that a cost savings. but CNG is mile for mile 1/2 the cost of running diesel or gasoline, and with a home refueling station the savings are greater.

CNG requires a different pump. That's generally what I see as the different. Seperate relays, fuses and sensors to detect the type of fuel used. like FFV cars, but utilizing equipment for vapor-based fuels.
