Is the procedure on v8sho.com well documented? I believe it requires 2 pcs. of pvc...

Hi, David. I didn't bother with the pvc on my '97. I took a hacksaw to the tube about three inches from the outlet inside the wheelwell. From that point, I removed the rest of the assembly forward to the front of the car. Took maybe 20 minutes, same result. The pvc would look better, but no one will see it. Throw in a K&N panel filter, and you are good to go. thumb

I fought with a friends PCV parts and threw them away. Put on a 12" piece of 3" expandable semi-rigid aluminum duct. I used black tape to attach it to the air box and wrapped the rest of the tube up with it too.

That is exactly what I did. It is a free mod.

Well, once the saxacone is cut off, the stock setup is actually quite nice. Kind of a stock cold-air setup.

Yes. And, along with the first three posters, I suggest skippiing the PVC elbow done by Mr. Porter entirely. I used truck rad hose of the same diameter as the intake for the air box when it is cut off to just leave a lip you can attach the hose to. This way you can have a smooth, no bends intake straight to the port into the wheel well. Purely for cosmetics, I put a rad clamp over the joint to the air box, to even it up and get the stainless connector look, though I suppose it would somewhat act as a backup if the three attachement screws under it failed.

Not in my opinion. Having that little saxacone tube on your intake is like putting the small attachment on your vaccum cleaner. If you look at it closely, it grows more narrow towards the end, if I'm not mistaken. The 3" PVC at least allows a greater volume of air to pass.

Actually, I suggested cutting the intake 3 inches from the inside of the outlet through the wheelwell. If and when you attempt this mod, you will notice a bracket near the top of the wheelwell with the tube attached. Cut just forward of that bracket, and leave the tube alone from that point back to the airbox. Remove the "sax" assembly, reinstall the fender liner over the wheel, put the wheel back on, and hit the road. Don't forget the K&N filter-$44 at Autozone- for better airflow. Also, once you put the new filter in, you will want to disconnect the neg. side of your battery for 15 minutes. This will reset the computer to the now-copious amounts of air feeding the beast! This is one of the easiest things you can do for your GenIII, and you will notice a difference in performance. thumb

OK... I just took it for a spin after the "mod". Maybe I was expecting too much, but it was nothing like I expected. Taking the silencer out of the v6 sho was like night and day when the secondaries opened up, but I did not sense any change with the v8... nothing real noticeable.
Here is what I did. Removed the wheelwell (splash guard if you will).
Took a saw and cut near the top of the saxacone (leaving only about 3 inches sticking out) Removed the remaining lower saxacone.
Reinstalled everything.
Note: I did not touch anything under the hood.

Did I do all that is necessary?
Are my end results over par?
Could I be having a problem with the secondaries? (the engine roar seems good and loud up high, but I DO NOT hear a distinct secondary roar at 3500 rpms. shrug

No it reeally doesn't make that much difference. I have seen stock GEN 3 SHOs pull within 10 hp of modded ones.

FWIW the best bolt on mod I have seen on the dyno was a Borla cat back.

I have installed 2 cold air boxes. One in a '97 with the saxacone removed and one in a '99 with it cut 3" from the air filter. I chose to leave the saxacone in because it is very hard to access.

Received the same result for both. When idle you can hear the engine breathing nicely in both cars. The performance seems to kick in at 35mph and both make a nice roar when pulling in air. The increase in performance from this mod will not raise your eyebrows, however, the roar will.

Are you guys getting a distinct "secondary" roar at 3500 rpms? I am not.
When I took out the silencer in my v6, the secondaries at 4k sound AMAZING! Does the v8 not have the same results?
If I were to remove the rest of the saxacone (only 3 inches sticking into the fenderwell), would that help increase the sound I am looking for?

My '97 is "porterized" and I hear a distict ROAR from my engine between 3000 and 3500 rpms. I used the 3" PVC and 3"x3" rubber coupler and really didn't have any problems installing this system. To each his own though, if you don't want to use the rigid PVC, then use some flexible type of hose, just make sure that the diameter is larger than the factory plumbing, after all why try this mod if you are going to keep parts of the factory system or the same size of tubing? Doesn't make sense to me, I removed the whole factory set up all the way up to the air box and replaced it all with the "Porter" set up and have been very pleased with the results. Passengers really notice the sound as well and comment on how cool it is!

My wish is that I had dynoed the car both before and after having put in my mod-Porterization, instead of only after. Has anyone actually done this, to give us a real value for any resulting change?

Yeah I wish I knew the exact gain in HP as well. I had read that anywhere from 10 to 25 HP good be gained from the "porter" mod alone, but who actually has the figures? shrug
