I am on my 2nd SHO now. I had a 2012 and now I have a 2011. Both SHO's have had an issue. Upon cranking them cold in the morning, or when it has sat for a few hours, there is a slight "knock". It goes away quickly, but they both do it. Well, not the 2012 because it's totaled and probably in a junk yard :( When I drive it during the day and running around town, no noise. I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this issue and if you have...what is it? I keep the oil changed as I should and use synthetic oil. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks! BTW...the SHO I have now has 97k miles.

Is the noise you're referring to definitely related to the rotation of then engine? Does it sound like valvetrain noise, bottom end noise, exhaust manifold ticking, or something else? Do you know if the oil filters that get installed have an anti-drain back valve?

It actually sounds like top-end noise. I thought that maybe it was the turbos making the noise. Like I said, both my 2011 and 2012 have (had) the same noise. As far as the oil filter, I have no idea. It is whatever Jiffy **** uses for a synthetic oil change. Again, it only does it on a cold start. During normal everyday driving and stopping, it's quiet. I'm baffled. Thanks for your interest in helping me with this, Rod. Cliff

Sounds like phaser rattle. As a test, depress the gas pedal to the floor, crank the engine for 10-15 seconds (the engine won't start). Then start the engine normally. See if the noise is gone. If so, the initial cranking filled the phasers with oil. Really just an annoyance until a check engine light illuminates.

Thanks! I will try that when I leave from work today. Just so I understand...push the accelerator pedal to the floor...push the start button for about 15 seconds. After that start it normally. Is that correct?

I’m guessing chain slap. May sound silly but try a motorcraft oil filter next change. Twice in my SHO ownership I had to settle for another brand when wherever I was didn’t have motorcraft and I had the cold start rattle both times.
